Young Lovers
Before you get the wrong idea, Young Lovers isn’t a store chock-full of soppy Valentines shirts, it’s a label with a penchant for innovative and sometimes challenging design, with an incredibly slick site, selling their limited edition tees in batches of just 100 each. Super soft printed full panel sweatshop free graphic tees with an eye on the urban end of the arts, quirky, left-field maybe, but definitely hanging on the stylish end of the wardrobe.
The subject matter does however lean mainly towards affairs of the heart, in one example Organ Donor, that ethos is exemplified at a very biological level. Asides the romantic there are a few visual puns on offer, my favourite has to be their Black Cat tee, although that might be more conceptually pleasing than visually to many, I like the attitude. Art before fashion is definitely the direction to take in the highly competitive art t-shirt market. I have to say the pricing structure is a little overblown for my pocket, coming in at $48 each for guys and girls. A back panel and custom printed inner label might have softened the blow, future food for thought maybe.
Lovers Tee
A nice play on the iconic typographic Pop Art paintings by Robert Indiana, the Lovers Tee is available in 3 colours for men and women.
Anonymous Mona Tee
Forget that enigmatic smile, here’s a great quote by Leonardo himself (no not the one in Titanic) “Art is never finished, only abandoned.” I’m not quite sure if it’s the annotated Mona Lisa T-Shirt or The Anonymous Mona Tee. Perhaps that comes as part and parcel of the enigma that is Mona :p YL even suggest scribbling your own face in the blank space, I have to admit I’d be tempted…
Black Cat Tee
“A Black Cat Eating Liquorice at Midnight“. It’s funny, in a pithy, British guffaw kinda way. I suppose it might only be me, that has happened before, but I do love a good art joke (or even a bad one). I’m sure this tee should be hanging in the Tate, after all it’s all art these days. I can see a whole spin-off collection for this theme, how about a flock of sheep in a snowstorm or a zebra on a zebra crossing? Heh.
Organ Donor Tee
A lovely simple doodle graphic, slightly abstracted, and not at all as gruesome as it sounds, actually it’s rather cheery in a macabre sort of way. The Organ Donor comes in 3 sweet colours for guys and girls with a leaning towards “inner beauty” – after all it’s what’s on the inside that counts…

Valentine T-Shirts Kinda Suck
Yes it’s almost (but not quite) that time of year again, another “Hallmark Cards Moment” created to make men miserable, women feel wanted, the lonely make fools of themselves, and corporations even richer than they are already; but still I thought I’d better prepare those amongst you who happen to be as unromantic as me and remind you that if you don’t want your respective partner to sulk on February 14th you’d better put your orders in soon and order something or other for that most special of days.
I’m not quite sure if a t-shirt is the most romantic of gifts, and if your one of those people who’s considering buying a matching personalised pair of tees that declares your undying love for each other to the world I will have to try and avoid you both when this brief and overtly commercialised celebration of romantic love rears its ugly head again.
The truth is I find it almost impossible to buy the right present for my other half at Valentines. I’ve done the unthinkable and bought her nothing at all one year, and even though she politically agreed with my decision I did have to “make it up to her” over the next few weeks all the same. The problem is chocolates make you fat, flowers are corny, I have no taste in women’s jewellery, for her or myself, and all in all I’m useless when it comes to sweet and slushy sentimental gestures. read more
