Threadless.com‘s business timing couldn’t be better, sure it may just be the grizzled old cynic in me that can’t resist pointing this one out, but have you heard about the state of Icelandic’s economy these days? On average their prices for everything from hotels to food to shopping and bars are down around 40% compared to last year. So even if you don’t win their latest competition, it shouldn’t break the bank if you fancy popping over there for a while. Still it’s always nice to get a freebie, and with the latest theme of ‘Threadless Loves Travel’ you’ll have a pretty wide remit as far as design briefs go.

I’ve just got back from Morocco so the wild and frenzied culture of North Africa is still spinning through my mind, but to be honest you could choose anywhere and anything, be it the Great Pyramids of Egypt or the Great Wall of China, an Amazonian adventure, a flight into space, I’m not sure if time travel would count (although I’d be game – would be handy for the lottery numbers).

Whatever you fancy creating for the contest make sure you submit your work by their deadline for entries on October 22, 2008. Their contest is sponsored by Icelandair, action sports accessories company Dakine, IES Abroad (Institute for the International Education of Students), and even the band Calexico, are each making it possible for the best design to take to the skies in style. The creator of the winning design will receive a bounty of travel goodies including two round-trip tickets to Iceland on Icelandair, a $1k credit to a travel site of his or her choosing, courtesy of IES, a Dakine Split Roller 90 Travel Bag, and a personalized song, written by Calexico, inspired by the winning design.

Tom Burns is probably my only other t-shirt hero out there right now, as you’ll know from the praise I’ve lavished on Glennz before, I am a complete and utter sucker for well conceived, beautifully drawn, corny one-liners. I know I’m probably in the minority, it isn’t what you’d call beautiful art, it just does the job. Perfectly.

Take a look at the history of graphic arts, advertising, poster design, Modern Art in general and you’ll see the same approach. It’s the backbone of any conceptualist artist’s oeuvre – you gotta’ have a sense of humour! Without that essential ingredient you’re left cold, or even confused. I’m not apolitical, if anything I’d probably be classed as a ‘lefty’ by most Americans, but essentially there’s more to it than that. I live in Britain, and it isn’t all that great, but we’ve learned to live with it because however dire the situation, we can still find humour in most situations, however tragic. Or rather we used to before the worldwide media and the rise of political correctness got in the way. My point is this, Tom Burns understands the world of the cynic, the lampoonist, the subjective rewards of critically appraising the tiniest details in life to undermine the greatest. Top List of Threadless Clones aka T-Shirt Vote Sites

Yes it’s another list, it’s not just the fact that ‘top lists’ seem to rank so well on Google but that this one has been bugging me for a while. I’ve been looking for the perfect t-shirt voting site for ages, something that offers high prizes, fair rates and provides most of the publicity themselves. There isn’t one out there, I’ve seen so many of these sites relying on popular members rather than fantastic designers to boost their profile. Besides there are so many good t-shirt designers out there not getting the kudos they deserve, it seems to make more sense to set up your own t-shirt voting/fulfilment site rather than submit your designs, which probably explains why there are so many on this list! read more

I’ve a rather diverse selection of tee news for you today, starting with a few Barack Obama t-shirts available at ThrivingInk.com. Before you ask, I would feature McCain tee shirts here if they were as funky as Thriving Ink’s, but I somehow doubt that Republicans would want to wear anything as out there as these (first two) beauties. I do lean towards Obama for obvious reasons, the world oil crisis which has worsened so much more since the initial attack on Iraq, Guantanamo Bay, and the travesty of the Iraq war as a whole, plus the fact that Obama looks awake! read more

Sex and Death at Threadless

That title should pull in the punters… I’ve just submitted my first design to Threadless.com – gawd knows if I have got it right, their submissions process seems to be the most complicated yet, no wonder the prizes are so high! I’m not in it for the money, but as I was saying to a fellow t-shirt nutter today, it has to be worth it just for PR alone, I’m talking publicity here, no Google rankings, although the two go hand-in-hand I suppose.

I received an email from Threadless.com describing their latest competition and I was pulled in head first. The theme is Sex and Death and the competition is on behalf of Fray.com – a true stories site – I’ll probably need a true story for my submission as I just went ahead and drew the first thing that came into my mind, and here it is… read more
