9 Fountains

Here’s another new t-shirt community for you, 9 Fountains is based in Singapore, their shop is already packed with some superb tees all available at 35 SGD each which is around $27 or £17 in sizes XS-XL (if they run out you can request a reprint!). They treat their customers to free shipping on orders of 3 or more shirts and their winning artists to 400 SGD + commission + two free tees. Looks like a great deal, and these look like great t-shirts…

7th Dimension Tee

7th Dimension Tee (Black)

Available in black and grey- very very cute detailing which looks like an Eastern European folk art version of scenes from Alice in Wonderland. Ah well, whatever floats your boat. The artist ryansham remains rather a mystery.

Anybody Can Be Tee

Anybody Can Be Tee

Very funny and absolutely superb illustrations of familiar faces wearing specs to up their game as blind-as-a-bat designers. Move away from that screen! Available in grey. Artist Leah Chen.

Body Tee

Body Tee

A cool piece of comic art by Jia Ying. check the details, there’s a bear stuck in the ribcage and a little girl about to prod some lower intestines – eeww. Lol. Great stuff, get it in black.

Cat Tee

Cat Tee

A lovely piece of watercolour art by Dawn Tan on a t-shirt, now there’s a rarity, I’ve never understood why more labels don’t branch out into watercolour tees, a perfect combo. Available in white.

Head Tee

Head Tee

Another anatomical delight, this time a superb illustration that looks like a blend of manga and Russian art by Jia Ying. Is it a balloon on a string or a big headed kid hocking a loogie? Who cares, it’s great. Available in white.

Something Snapped Tee

Something Snapped Tee

A funny tee by tengwan. It’s a lovely early Eighties style design, however the speech bubble is written in the wrong tense. It should be “I think I heard something snap” not “I think I heard something snapped.” Ah well. Get it in black complete with typo.

Skull Tee

Skull Tee

If you haven’t had your fill of skull tees this one looks like a sketch by Van Gogh! Great work from Kittozutto. Available in black.

Tee-Issue

Tee-Issue is a t-shirt community with a difference, they’re guided by a series of values, and noble ones at that. “Love. Freedom. Dreams. Children’s rights. Environmental preservation.” For all those who wear their heart on their sleeve, perhaps its time to consider wearing it on your chest. If you’d like to jump in at the deep end and share Tee-Issue’s love of storytellling and moral highground, have a strong design background and want to get involved then contact them at designs@tee-issue.com.

If you’d rather do a little shopping then check out these shirts, ranging from $35 to $40 each and in various cuts and sizes, there is a naive yet rather charming range of designs on offer.

Swing Not Wii Tee

Swing not Wii Tee

Get this cutie (for the ladies) in sizes S-L for $35. Funny thing about the Wii, why don’t they just connect it to an exercise machine and get it over with – or at the very least add a few pounds weight to that controller :p

Spring Fling Tee

Spring Fling Tee

Is a Spring Fling something like a holiday fling? It seems to be mandatory if you’re a Brit in Ibiza. Ah well, nice tee, cool style too, get this unisex shirt for $35 in sizes S-L.

A Sip of Love Tee

A Sip of Love Tee

A Sip of Love Tee (Back)

A gorgeous ladies tee, this and the next are printed on both sides hence the price hike. Great value all the same. Rather French in appearance which would probably go down well in St. Tropez, then again you’d probably be wearing a Monokini :0 Ladies can get their sip of love for $40 in sizes S-L.

Mirror Tee

Mirror Tee

Mirror Tee (Back)

Mirror is very childlike in style and character, but the overall composition leans towards the profound. Something like a Bergman scene painted by a kindergarten Picasso. This and most of the tees at Tee-Issue definitely evoke a more painterly style. Very refreshing! $40 in sizes S-L.

New T-Shirt Community – Prawspektiv

Prawspetiv - A New Tee Community

I don’t know much about Prawspektiv.com but they seem a friendly enough bunch, based in Europe (I’m guessing France by the language options) and offering up a bloody enormous $5000 prize for their first design winner. The contest starts on the 11th of February 2011 so there’s’ plenty of time to think up some genius designs – heh. I do know this – they want very detailed designs – so you’d better get practising! If you want to know more then your best bet is to follow them on Twitter or fan them at Facebook. Until then this flyer will have to keep you satisfied :0

Double The Fun at Springleap

It’s been quite a while since Buy Tees has featured Springleap, they’re a highly popular South African t-shirt community with designers and fans all around the world. Something I was getting a little tired of were the themed contests over there, well it seems I’m not the only one because Springleap has changed it’s policy to an open door one, i.e draw what you like, as long as it doesn’t break any decency laws, but asides that you’re free to express yourself any which way and how. Even better news is that to celebrate the shift back to open-brief design submissions the next prize is going to be a staggering $1000! If you’re an old pro and made your name at other t-shirt communities such as Threadless and DBH, now’s the time to hop on board with Springleap and try and get your highly talented mitts on their impressive pile of cash! What’s more you’ll earn residuals from every t-shirt sold too…

The competition details :

Regular guidelines apply: NO OBSCENITY, NO HATE SPEECH …all that JAZZ.

Designers can submit up to 5 designs.

Submissions for designs open: 23 September 2010
Submissions for designs close: 12 October 2010
Voting starts: 14 October 2010
Voting ends: 28 October 2010
Winner is announced: 28 October 2010

So get cracking and submit your very best t-shirt designs today at www.Springleap.com.

If you’re just after buying a tee there then we’ve got a discount voucher for you lucky people – just use the code: springleap2010 at the checkout by 31 October 2010to get two tees for the price of one!

Threadless For Schools?

Now we all know how massively successful the Threadless t-shirt community is as a business model, there have been so many sites that have taken up the t-shirt crowd-sourcing gauntlet it’d be near impossible to compile a full and updated list these days. Nevertheless I still like to keep my ear to the ground, (or should that be eyes to the screen?), when it comes to t-shirt contest sites, especially when they’re aimed at a niche market. If you’re not or have never been in the t-shirt industry it might seem a little dull (O.K very dull) to be talking about business models, but just like any business on the net, capturing a market is essential if you ever want to make it as a major player in the indie t-shirt sector. So I was rather intrigued by an email I received yesterday from James Gallagher at www.wearurschool.com, sure the spelling wouldn’t win a prize but the concept could be big given the right coverage on the net.

WearUrSchool.com was very recently launched, August 25 this year to be precise so don’t expect all the bells and whistles quite yet, the collection may seem rather bare but that’s all down to how many new designers they can attract, and of course ultimately the quality of talent. Their company features both t-shirts and hoodies with designs created by students. Students upload a school design they have created. WUS then prints those designs on their products and the student designers make a percentage of the sales. All of their clothing is silk screen printed on American Apparel 50/50 ultra soft cotton tee shirts and Champion ultra soft hooded sweatshirts.

I’m going to reserve my judgement for now, I love the idea but it will take a major dedicated server to handle this site if every school participates (which is about 15.5K high schools in the USA), and a factory to print the tees, just as would for instance… Threadless. What I do know is Wear Ur School is going to need a hell of a lot of publicity to spread the word. Perhaps holding competitions and offering prizes at each school would be a start, even a poster campaign for every art class and some charitable donations from the profits to a reputable children’s charity to give it legs. The whole strategy is viral as far as I can see, a student designs a tee and tells their friends at school to vote for it and even buy it.  It just might work!

Teextile – A Rip Off?

Teextile Sucks!I’ve received quite a few emails and  comments regarding Teextile.com‘s terrible track record of snatching people’s money for nothing and I think it’s long due that I take up the gauntlet on behalf of all of those who have been let down by this company. When Teextile first approached me last year for a review everything seemed fine, I had no reason to suspect that this t-shirt community unlike many others out there would end up as the spectacular failure that they truly are. I’ve tried to play Devil’s Advocate, especially after I received a begging letter from them a few weeks ago asking me not to write this post i.e not to criticise their business practices, in order that they would have a chance at fulfilling at least a few more of their outstanding orders. The fact is they have failed to rectify anything promised in their recent email, stating that they’d realised their error, had redesigned the site as Teextile 2.0 and were busy making up for all the trouble and anger they have caused amongst those who had paid for one of their shirts.

The argument that each is only out of pocket by $7 isn’t really the point, I can understand many thinking hey $7 is hardly anything, but if that’s the case why haven’t Teextile simply refunded all those who have still not received their tees? Here’s the latest comment regarding Teextile submitted today at Buy Tees:

I ordered 1 T-shirt 2 weeks ago and never received yet. My order # does not work on the web page so I tried emailing everyday. They have yet to answer. I did some research and saw that the last complaint on BBB was on Feb 23, 2010. With so many complaints, they need to be exposed immediately. If you’ve been ripped off…..even for $7, please take the time to file on bbb.org

Don’t bother emailing them at info@teextile.com or orders@teextile.com……you’ll get a return email “failure to send”. If that’s not fishy enough…..I don’t know what it? Teextile is really a bogus company taking our money for FREE! It’s not fair for us hard working customers.

Buy Tees were advised to tell our readers to use the above email addresses to contact Teextile and ensure they receive their tees or at least a refund. However if it’s true that they are now blocking emails from their customers then it goes hand in hand that Teextile are trying to dodge their financial liabilities. It is their legal responsibility to refund each and every customer who hasn’t received their product. Here’s the last email I received from Teextile regarding this post…

“I urge (you) not to write a bad article regarding this. We (have) had many problems with our shop with flooding and (losing) loosing (thousands) thoundsand of dollars in merchandise. We are trying to rebuild our name and get out of all the problems that we (have) had in the past. We will prove our selves and as a tshirt community(.) (I) i would hope for your support.” It would help if they could write in English for a start!

Will one of many anonymous workers at Teextile had included a comment at one of our posts regarding their plan to rectify this total disaster of a t-shirt community. The fact is I have removed it, I don’t like being taken advantage of, I have spent weeks reading emails from their angry customers and enough is enough. I took the guy on his word, he lied. So insted I welcome all to comment at this post with their complaints, perhaps if enough do at least some sort of action maybe taken against them regarding the recovery of monies owed. If not, at least it’s a chance for people to get it off their chests. Chests that should be wearing Teextile’s t-shirts right now…

Here’s one of the first emails I received regarding Teextile’s dubious business practices from one of their disgruntled customers -

“Do you like to get gifts for Christmas? Well, I like to Give gifts. I ordered one of the t-shirts on Nov. 8 for my son for Christmas. It is now two days before Christmas and NO t-shirt. I’ve emailed and emailed but no answer to my request of “Where is my t-shirt?”…..So my card was charged November 10 and an email confirmation was sent to my email that they got my order. BUT still no t-shirt. So I finally found their phone # and called them. The man who answered said that the t-shirt company was his brothers and this was his phone #. What kind of company puts his relatives phone # on his business? What customer service, he took my name and # and said he would tell his brother I called?”.

Here’s a few comments that express just how angry people are getting now:

“The Textile folks are absolute snakes. DO NOT BUY from them. There are *plenty* of other great shirt companies out there, don’t waste your time with this “business.” Don’t take my word for it, check out the San Diego Better Business Bureau website (of which teextile is not a member, of course) and see how many complaints have been logged against them.”

“Thanks to Buy-Tees. Perhaps they’ll respond to you? One can only hope. At the end of the day $7 is not the end of the world- I just want to know that others know they’re throwing it down the drain.”

Here’s a comment on Teextile’s own homepage right now:

“So Franco, another week has passed and you STILL refuse to communicate on the refund my order, which was placed in SEPTEMBER. You have all the information you need to do a Western Union money transfer, which you can do online in very few minutes. Yet you refuse to provide basic customer service to someone who has bought several shirts from you previously. This is UNACCEPTABLE for an online store to conduct business this way. Send my my refund. To the design on this page, I encourage you to not allow the owner of this site steal more money from people through your art, please consider taking your designs down. A business is not judged by if they get some things right, it’s how they act when something goes wrong.”

It’s sad to admit it but Teextile have despite their protests stolen money from many of their customers. If there’s a will there’s a way, I think the best option right now as suggested by a few of the above is to contact the Better Business Bureau. The problem is that unless hundreds come forward I doubt much action can be taken. However at least we can assure that Teextile doesn’t continue to fleece pockets of unsuspecting customers by spreading the word. To help those who have been ripped off by Teextile please consider mentioning this post at Twitter, Facebook, Digg, Stumbleupon, your own blogs, anywhere that might further the message. There’s a list of social networking buttons beneath this post if you care to help the many Teextile have let down. The more that know about Teextile’s behaviour the less likely they will be able to continue to operate.

RateTshirts.com

T-shirt Ratings at RateTshirts.comYou may have noticed the posts have been relatively drying up at Buy Tees since Xmas. The truth is we need contributors, true t-shirt fans with a passion for blogging, we will credit your blog or website on our homepage if you’re reviews are up to scratch, and we’d need at least 2 a month from each contributor. Plus carte blanche on all or any t-shirt news you can hunt down on the net. Email me if you fancy reviewing shirts, but please, no self-promoters, just true fans of the art.

The fact is I’m snowed under with a million things to do at the moment. What with my personal blog, my new arts blog at ArtUrban.co.uk and now the latest addition to the Bainsey network, RateTshirts.com. I’ve had this domain sitting around for years, I thought it might have sold by now, but thinking about it I’m glad it didn’t. It means I can still keep a hand in as far as t-shirt design goes, sharing my love for the latest and greatest in t-shirt design and so can all of you! read more
