Rather a beautiful rendering and a classic(ish) novel to boot.

“Fear is the mind-killer.” If you recognise that phrase then you’re a true sci-fi buff. I have to admit I don’t read as much sci-fi as I used to, although ever since the demise of my failed career as a sci-fi screenplay writer (don’t ask) I have trawled the outer limits of the sci-fi movie genre with something of an obsessive zeal. If it’s any good I’ve seen it, along with quite a few cinematic bombs too, one of them of course being Dune.

David Lynch‘s commercial flop was an adaptation of Frank Herbert‘s hexalogy, featuring everything I should hate, but for some reason, in this one exception, am swayed, heavily. The soundtrack is awful, with contributions from electronic music god Brian Eno, it sounds like Queen (the band not the monarch) but worse. Sting really is a truly terrible actor following the tradition of pop stars deciding they can act, Jagger, Bowie, Madonna, they never learn. Then there’s the highly confused plot that makes Zardoz look logical, and a perfect example for why condensed adaptations of literary trilogies always fail at the box office, hence the LOTR epics. Still, what a line “Fear is the mind killer”.

Pass me the spice someone.

I came across this little gem a few months back, watched it in a rather inebriated state late at night, and laughed my socks off. I love all the old seventies blaxploitation blockbusters, especially the ‘Shaft’ movies, and so it was a real treat for me to see the genre revived. The actors aren’t the most famous in the world and the budget was on the low side, but the team behind the film did a cracking job, and it looks like a lot of people out there have the same opinion including Lil Jon, Talib Kweli, and Kid Cudi. If you want to know more check out the hilarious www.fightsmackintheorphanage.org or watch the trailer.

Take a look at this star studded roll-call of famous clients of the NY based fashion designer Wendy Mullin of Built by Wendy fame:-

Sofia Coppola, Zooey Deschanel, Jack Black, Parker Posey, Andy Samberg, Kirsten Dunst, Michelle Williams, Jonah Hill, Paul Rudd, Amy Poehler, Kristen Wiig, Amber Tamblyn, Rashida Jones, James Franco, Zoe Cassavetes, Claire Danes, Jason Schwartzmann.

Yes this girl is popular and then some, and no wonder why! Her flair for designing all kinds of clothing and her undoubtedly fine talent for illustration has resulted in a cult fashion label that’s influence has spread far and wide around the world. Asides a vast range of original pieces like her beaded Native American belts, cabled fisherman sweaters, canvas tote-bag inspired dresses and much more, there are links to a wide range of men’s and women’s t-shirts that evoke a longing for the past, a great taste in old movies, and a hankering for a simpler more traditional view on the world.

If you love classic movies such as To Kill a Mockingbird, Ordinary People and Mean Streets, and would love to see their iconic imagery and mood deftly illustrated and supplanted to high quality t-shirts, then www.builtbywendy.com should be your first port of call. BBW (an unfortunate abbreviation perhaps) offer a glimpse into the past, into simpler times when fashion was more friendly, when the majority of fashion lovers would buy their clothes locally, or even create them themselves from professional patterns.

By no coincidence Mullin sells her designs as patterns at her store, reigniting the past practices of millions of home seamstresses across the world. Even I remember my mother and my sister for a while busying themselves at a pair of sewing machines, busily beefing up their wardrobes with all the latest styles of the time, created from materials of their own choice, they really did become rather good at it. Of course there was the occasional mistake, and after a moment of parodied parading they’d unpick the offending item and begin a new blouse, dress, pair of slacks or when they were feeling more daring perhaps a coat or jacket. If you’re not too confident at the sewing machine then you might want to try her SEW U series of books, which include plenty of patterns and tips to get you started.

Take a look at these fine examples of her work…

Beautifully drawn and with a great sense of humour, love the moody style and sentiment. Wendy’s flagship store is based in Little Italy so she should know just how bad Little Italy’s Feast of San Gennaro really is. A quote from Wikipedia explains the situation… ‘Some residents of Little Italy dislike the noise, garbage, and crowds generated by the festival. Although it is portrayed as a neighbourhood event, most of the organizers, vendors, or attendees do not live in the area. For more than a decade, moreover, federal prosecutors have raised concerns that organized crime is involved in running the festival‘. The featured tee is for the ladies and comes in sizes S to L and S to XL for men. Each are available for a rather high price at $45 however there are design differences in the embroidered details. The women’s feature an embroidered Italian flag and the men’s has an embroidered line in the colours of the flag at the bottom of the design.

I love this design, I am with Bart Simpson when he states that Mickey is the mascot of an evil corporation, but this design clearly harks back to the very beginnings of the Disney empire. At a time when a rather badly drawn mouse did little more than jump about, squeak and occasionally laugh at very little. If only this particular rodent had met with a fateful accident we might not need to endure the likes of Euro Disney and awful awful remakes of classic literature aka Tim Burton’s pathetic reinterpretation of the classic novel Alice in Wonderland (even the cheap cartoon version fairs better). Still don’t get me started on Disney, back to the t-shirt, a classic in the making. Confusingly enough Wendy has decided to supply the same product photo modelled by a slightly ginger geek for both the men‘s and women‘s versions of this tee, so don’t worry if you think you’ve arrived at the wrong page, you haven’t. Again this one is pricey, I suppose you could argue that you get what you pay for, and when you want a quality t-shirt by a top NYC fashion designer $45 doesn’t sound so exuberant. Available in ‘athletic grey’ in sizes XS to XL for both sexes.

Another fantastically well drawn design, love the play on words, subverting the whole College Break / Girls Gone Wild idiom, ever so subtly to the point that even mentioning it seems somewhat obtrusive, the Dudes Gone Wild tee features Warren Oats from Hired Hand & Cockfighter; Stacy Keach from Fat City; Harry Dean Stanton from Cockfighter & Cisco Pike; and Kris Kristofferson from Cisco Pike & Pat Garrett.
Following on the rough and tumble theme The Bloody Boys Tee comes in heather blue and features Noah Taylor from “Flirting”, Malcolm McDowell from “If”, Bud Cort from “Harold & Maude”, Adam Baldwin from “My Bodyguard”. (If you love If then check out O Lucky Man!) Once again superb illustrations make up this unique design, available in heather blue in all sizes for both men and women.

Wendy’s t-shirts are like a breath of fresh air to the market, simple high quality tees printed with a beautiful selection of traditional illustrations featuring a blend of nostalgic and obscure imagery, reinterpreted for the 21st century with a gentle sense of humour and a highly delicate touch.

1998 saw the opening of Wendy’s first flagship retail store on Centre Market Place in the Little Italy neighbourhood in NYC. Her successful online shop launched soon after that, and in 2005 she opened her second retail store in the Williamsburg neighbourhood of Brooklyn. Her line is carried in boutiques and indie stores throughout the USA and around the world. Wendy has further built up the brand by venturing into publishing and numerous high profile collaborations. In 2003, Wendy was hired as Creative Director of Wrangler47, a limited premium denim line for Wrangler Jeans. The collaboration was highly successful and the line completely sold out across the USA.

There’s only one real criticism of Wendy’s store, either she should get some new models in (especially for the women’s tees, using a man is just confusing), or failing that get a better looking BF. Only joking lol.

Alex, the illustrating dynamo behind the label has certainly been very busy these last few months with an impressive half dozen more tees on offer, here are three of my faves to wet your appetite…

Shaun of the Dead T-shirt

Shaun of the Dead is definitely my all-time second favourite zombie movie, and depending on my mood a close contender for first. I love Dawn of the Dead, the original George A. Romero version of course, [REC] is a relatively recent addition to the genre and well worth watching, The Crazies is more of a pandemic movie (new version out this year), but SOTD is the only movie that has ever managed to make me laugh at zombies in a good way. Not because of the terrible effects like many I could mention. The truth is I am a serious Simon Pegg fan, I loved all his TV work, Spaced, Zombies, even the ugh ugh ugh song on Big Train. So excuse the bias when I say that DB’s Fried Gold Recruitment Farm t-shirt rocks my world! If you’ve seen SOTD then you’ll know that kept under the right conditions, on a chain, zombies can still perform simple and repetitive tasks. Dark Bunny has taken the idea to a whole new level, and who knows if Pegg and Wright ever clap eyes on this, they might even use the idea for a sequel heh. Get this amazing tee for £25 in sizes S to XXL (Free Shipping in the UK).

The Anchorman T-shirt (full name Anchorman : Sex Panther) is as expected a hilarious design, in keeping with one of the most ridiculous movies (in a good way) ever made. Most will say you either love Will Ferrell or you hate him, or perhaps you love to hate him, whatever, he’s damn funny, and it’s no put on for the cameras. The guy is like a hyperactive kid on too much candy who can’t help jumping on his bed for no reason. I’m not a big fan of spoof films in general, except perhaps Airplane, all the others since have kind of sucked, but when the spoof is less literal, evoking a time, a place, rather than referencing a bunch of blockbuster movies from the past, I love it. Anchorman is a homage to a time when sexism ran rife, as did bad ties, and dodgy potions like Spanish Fly rumoured (falsely) to enhance “sexual attraction”. In Anchorman “Sex Panther” is all the rage, in fact there’s a site that sells it as a joke cologne, but I must reiterate, it doesn’t work, even if you don the flares, half open shirt and gold medallion to boot. The Anchorman tee is available for £25, it’s a very limited edition, just 100 will be sold worldwide, available in sizes S to XXL (Free Shipping in the UK).

Star Wars T-shirt

Perhaps my favourite tee at DB so far, the Star Wars – Meet The Skywalkers tee throws a true curveball into the collection. Unlike the usual illustrative perfection expected of Dark Bunny, this one appears to have been drawn by a kid, the sort of thing you’d find proudly displayed with the aid of fridge magnets by a proud parent. Which is why it is so funny, I’m really impresed with the authenticity of this design, deceptively detailed and perfectly conceived. I love the original Star Wars triology, the later three suck big time as far as I am concerned, they feel more like video game adaptations. I am sure that somewhere along the way George Lucas must have sold his soul to the devil because no one in their right mind would have ever conjured up a character like the awful (beyond belief) Jaja Binx. If you’re feeling nostalgic, have a great sense of humour, and £25 spare then you can get this shirt in sizes S to XXL in 4 vintage colours (Free Shipping in the UK).

As always incredibly well illustrated this time Dark Bunny’s evil gaze has focused on perhaps one of my all-time favourite classic horror films, the original 1978 version of Dawn Of The Dead by the zombie killing hero of a director George A. Romero and Boogie Nights, which admittedly he has sidetracked the main story and it’s infamous giant appendage belonging to the ‘adult entertainment’ star Dirk Diggler and instead safely drawn your attention to John C. Reilly‘s role as Reed Rothchild and his role in this sexy romp.

Let’s take a look at the tees…

Dawn Of The Dead (Gunner’s Den) Tee

Featuring ‘Gunner’s Den’ – the sports and leisure store at the Monroeville Mall – a mall I would say surely takes the lead role in the classic Dawn of the Dead movie. Lovely dig at middle America, gun-toting family sporting their firearms in the name of freedom. Who can blame them, they want to keep their brains, that’s understandable. Get this tee for £25 in sizes S to XXL (free shipping in the UK) here.

Boogie Nights Tee

Don’t expect anything explicit here, Dark Bunny has tread the waters carefully to produce a tee spoofing the classic 1997 movie Boogie Nights. As mentioned it features the character Reed Rothchild and his quite simply awful magic show, still a great design all the same. If there’s one movie Dark Bunny tees should be reinventing it should be that one, it’d be a great piece of brand alignment. Anyway I love the attitude exuding from this one man brand designed, managed and marketed by freelance illustrator Alex Chenery. Dark Bunny offers a parallel insight into the movie world, and though movie spoof tees are a rapidly growing market, I’ve even reviewed a few in my time at Buy Tees, I’m still convinced that:-

1. There’s plenty more room in the market.

2. Alex definitely has the graphic talent to conquer it if he focuses on building both the collection and brand recognition on the net.

Although his graphic expertise exudes from every pore I do feel the site navigation leaves a lot to desire, but that being a mere technicality I only have praise for Dark Bunny. Artistically these are the best movie tees I have seen in a long old while, I love the distressed effect which really gives the prints a vintage-feel, although I’d pull back from treating every design the same way. The fact is there are those who will love it and those that will hate it, so it’s a gamble, but I admire Alex’s gutsy decision nevertheless.

Asides the beautifully sharp and crisp illustrations there are some nice puns and for once a new label offers a “back story” on each tee, I’ve reviewed sites that don’t even offer a brief description of their t-shirts, bar the usual size, colour and price, so that’s a definite ace in Dark Bunny’s hand. I can appreciate why Alex has used Flash to present the tees and detailed close-ups, but how about a Flickr page to help promote the art, and whilst we’re at it, a Twitter page and blog wouldn’t go amiss. Building a following in a competitive market like this means you have to put yourself out there, the customers will only come if they know where you are.

Check out these tees, there are only five available right now, but I’m sure there will be plenty more to come, hop over to the dark side of movie merchandise with the Dark Bunny!

Loving the composition here, great spoof of BTTF, probably one of the most popular time travel movies ever made, and there slap bang in the middle of this tee is the flux capacitor. I’m a time travel nut, if there was such thing I’d be off in a jot, although as Red Dwarf has pointed out most clearly, you need to travel both time and space to actually achieve anything close to an adventure. Still I managed to catch the original Time Machine movie yet again today, the rather camp version starring Rod Taylor (one of my least favourite actors in history), the machine is the star of that film. I’ve even seen full scale models of it for sale in the USA, unfortunately they don’t work. Still, you’d think the boffins would’ve invented a hover board by now, at the very least. Get DB’s Back to the Future tee for in denim blue for £25 (UK) and £30.95 (International) including shipping in sizes S to XL.

Asian horror is fierce and not just Japanese, but Korean, Vietnamese, Chinese, if you haven’t seen the original of The Ring, go and watch it, yes subtitles are a bore but damn Hollywood screws up everything of this genre, I don’t need celebrities and cgi, just freaky story lines, spooky filming and great acting, and this movie has that. This t-shirt is appropriately created to the same high standards, featuring perhaps the most iconic scene in the film where a dead girl crawls through the TV, I can hear the bones clicking already. A very nice pun too, if there’s one place you shouldn’t rent a video it’s at Sadako’s. Does anyone still rent videos anyway? Who knows, I’m sure someone’s managed to transfer it to DVD by now. Here’s a great idea for a decent sequel if any movie biz types are reading this, how about “Dead Tube”?. You know, the same plot as Ringu (The Ring) but broadcast on the net, I suppose it would have to be filmed on a grand scale, but it’d work. Ten thousand people doing a ‘Thriller’ walk across Tokyo, should do nicely. Anyway, back to reality, get The Ring tee for £25 (UK) and £30.95 (International) including shipping in sizes S to XL in Vintage Red.

To celebrate the remake (fingers crossed it’s any good) of Nightmare on Elm Street in 2010, Dark Bunny is offering up this beauty for pre-order on a limited run for November-December. Love the realty idea, the graphics are superb too, but maybe, just maybe this one could have lived without the crackleture effect. Still that’s just my personal taste. Beautifully drawn, as you’d expect from Dark Bunny, this tee is available in vintage red sizes S to XL. Then there’s the world of Mondo Tees, a highly creative company with more than a few feathers to their bow, they love film, that can be gathered almost immediately on viewing their wide range of classic t-shirts and posters, but more so they offer an alternative vision, merchandise that was never made (but should’ve been), imagery that can conjure up the intrinsic feel of any plot line or character, with a level of finesse unseen for many years by the movie industry.

MondoTees.com offer one of the wildest selection of t-shirt collections seen this side of the silver screen, including memorable titles such as Badass Cinema and would you believe it even vintage nudie films get the treatment, there’s a section featuring a rather glitzy treatment of past and present famous directors in the business, and although they do offer a range of music tees too, I personally think that movie-influenced designs are their strong point.

MT don’t have a biography or ‘about page’, it’s a conscious choice to focus on the products rather than the people behind the label, their Facebook statement reads as follows – “If we have to explain what we are, you wouldn’t understand.” We understand, we understand. If you want to stay updated on all the latest if rather bizarre news from Mondo, then check out their blog, as well as their Twitter and Flickr pages.

For some true grittiness, why not take Mondo’s Remember The Alamo tee for a ride, it features the phenomenal art of poster designer Tyler Stout, and celebrates all the gun toting, dirt kicking, rootin’ tootin’ action of the 1960 movie The Alamo directed and starring the all-time giant of the Western genre John Wayne. OK… it actually it celebrates the work of the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema, but what the heck. Now I fully admit I’m not a fan of Cowboys and Indians, I preferred the idea of flying around in rockets and walking on the moon, although there was a lot of that about when I was a nipper – but even I bow down to the illustrative excellence of this tee and the original poster by Stout. Available as a brown ringer tee for $20, available in sizes S to 2XL (Medium sold out). Stout is a great artist who really could do with a lot more offers for t-shirt licensing and here’s why…

Yes it’s a poster, yes it’s sold out, and I know that Tarantino has thrown a few fans with his latest release but whatever your opinion on the film, bow down to the sheer exuberance of design offered by this Mondo Tees poster. If anything should be a t-shirt it should be this, it’s a shame it isn’t, a crying shame, but what can you do, an artist has to work within the medium he feels comfortable. Then again, Mondo could always offer a reprint of the poster?

For those not in the know, Werner Herzog is a celebrated German director, almost singlehandedly afforded the dubious accolade of being a founding father of German New Wave cinema, but here’s the funny thing, Mondo are planning on the majority of their market’s obliviousness to the talents of this giant of European film. It’s deliberately designed to emulate thrash and dark metal merchandise, to confuse and betray the sensibilities of a closed-minded generation looking for their next musical fix. Here’s what Mondo have to say on the subject – “Make everyone think you’re cool by wearing a “band” shirt, but watch their minds blow when they realize that it wasn’t what they thought it was. You’ll seriously be as cool as AC Slater minus the muscles, athletic ability, girlfriend, mullet and charisma!”. They then proceed to promise instant respect at any video store, well perhaps not Blockbusters, and who’d want that anyway? If you want to back up your film literary clout then an easy entry to Herzog’s work is most probably Nosferatu, then again none of them are primetime fodder. Oh, except for his upcoming remake of Bad Lieutenant with Nick Cage – which I am sure will suck in comparison to the original.

Arcane Projects offer a wide range of movie t-shirts, we’ve reviewed quite a few similar stores now however I have to admit that there are two things that stand out about this label over the competition. Firstly their choice in film is a little bit more esoteric, not obscure as such, but you will really need to know your celluloid with some of their t-shirts. Secondly they offer a unique sideline, something I haven’t seen at their competitors and that is a custom movie t-shirt service. In essence you name your favourite flick and they design a t-shirt that will allude to a detail of the plot, sometimes one that only those who can really call themselves ‘fans’ might recognise.

You will of course find all your old favourites a Arcane, including Terminator (1 & 2), The Shining, Fight Club and Aliens, but there are a few titles on offer that may come as a surprise. The eighties sci-fi classic The Running Man, an adaptation of a Stephen King short story written in 1982 under the pseudonym Richard Bachman, and Point Break, an early role for Keanu Reeves way before he found his place in movie history as Neo in The Matrix. However as I’ve already mentioned there’s nothing stopping you ordering your own custom movie tee, there are so many films out there that deserve this unique treatment, it would be great to see even more obscure movies get the ‘tee treatment’. As it happens I have THX1138 on the screen right now, the first and probably least well known George Lucas movie ever made, now that’s what I mean by obscure! Here are a few of my favourite t-shirts that have had the Arcane Project’s highly original going over, grab some popcorn, a giant cup of watery Coke, and kick back as we go to the movies…

Inspired by the movie Zoolander, this is the Derelicte tee by Arcane, and I have to admit I am a massive fan of this particular gem of the screen. I can never quite make up my mind about Ben Stiller, the guy might just be a genius, he’s made enough money for the industry to heap the kudos on him, he’s made at least three of the most stupid films I’ve ever liked, and that’s quite an achievement, he plays the arrogant self-aggrandising movie star/director a little too well for my liking, but Zoolander has to be one of the best films of its ilk ever conceived. Derelicte is the vision of the fashion designer and guru Mugatu, superbly played by Will Ferrell, and if you haven’t seen the film I’ll try not to spoil it, let’s just say he’s the baddie, although I am sure you’ll guess that the first time he appears on screen. I’d love to see Stiller and Ferrell team up more often, I suppose there just isn’t the room for both their egos on set these days. This is a cool t-shirt, it picks up on one of the strongest themes in the whole film, in fact perhaps the only one, unless you count Stiller’s ‘Blue Magnum’, which in essence is a look for the camera which would be impossible (and undesirable) to capture on tee. Here’s a quote from Mugatu to keep you in the spirit of Zoolander “Let me show you Derelicte. It is a fashion, a way of life inspired by the very homeless, the vagrants, the crack whores that make this wonderful city so unique.” Get the Derelicte tee now for £17.99 in a wide range of colours – sizes small to xxl.

Based on another classic cult movie, Arcane’s CRS tee takes its inspiration from the classic 1997 psychological thriller The Game which starred Michael Douglas as a bored businessman, given a ‘treat’ by his wayward brother Conrad, for his birthday. This along with Falling Down is the only true reason why I can abide the actor, I find him for the main part a glib and churlish character off-stage but I have to admit I have a great deal of respect for any actor who puts themselves through the paces that Douglas has. In both movies the central protagonist reaches a breaking point, both physically and psychologically reaching a near Zen moment of awareness through his suffering. Again I don’t want to spoil the plot but if you ever did wonder why Douglas was so rich and famous, maybe you remind yourself of exactly how he earned his ‘chops’ in the industry with these two classics. Thinking about it, it would be nice to see a t-shirt referencing Falling Down, perhaps the scene featuring a guy holding a placard ‘Not Economically Viable’ outside the bank would be a good starting point. However The Game’s translation to t-shirt form is far more simple, the organisation that gives Nicholas Van Orto the run around throughout the whole movie prides itself on bringing what they see as an exhilarating yet terrifying edge to the lives of bored rich businessmen across the country. In this case of course the whole thing goes horribly horribly wrong. Get the CRS t-shirt for £17.99 in sizes small to xxl, again in a wide variety of colours.

Now, I have to admit I’d rather have seen a reference to the original and highly superior 1978 version of Dawn of The Dead, however I can understand Arcane’s thinking here, essentially the more recent remake is most likely more out there in the public consciousness. However if they do decide to go the whole hog it should be the Monroeville Mall. Although all these technical details are by the by, the essential thing is that I and millions of others out there love zombie movies, they’re strangely comforting in a way, perhaps because they do away with the idea of death or the moral complications of gunning down the enemy, or maybe it’d simply the political reference to the state of modern society. We are all zombies in a way, blindly strolling through our lives, being told what to do, what to buy, where to go, then in turn telling others. The viral nature of Zombieism is particularly intriguing, mass communication, news, ideas, fashion, so many aspects of our global culture follow the same structure as disease, information is catching I suppose. Sometimes it helps us learn more, sometimes its simply spin created with the sole intention of throwing us all off the scent. Anyway, enough of the politics, let’s eat some brains. The Cross Roads Mall tee is available in four colours in sizes small to xxl for £17.99.

I love the movie One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest, the title sounds rather twee if you haven’t seen it, which would surprise me greatly. It’s not high on the radar for a lot of people, but mention the title and most will know the film. A lot of people mark The Shining, Kubrick‘s adaptation of Steven King’s horror novel as the best Jack Nicholson movie ever made (well it was the best Steven King adaptation), but in truth I think that OFOTCN is a far more complexed and moving portrayal by Jack. In fact the whole cast in the slice of cinema history were outstanding, most movies that deal with mental health handle the subject of mental health in a gushing or contrite manner (depending on the writer and director). OFOTCN is in a league of its own, focusing on the powerful emotional triad of survival, friendship and rebellion. Without all three elements neither the story nor the characters would have seemed believable. Most modern psychiatry has moved on to some degree, but there is still so little known about the human mind that I am convinced that the medical fraternity of the future will view our understanding and treatment of psychiatric health as barbaric, just as we do the Victorian Asylums of a century ago. Now give me a hand with this water fountain, I need to break a window.
Doh I’m a movie geek but I hate movie t-shirts? Is that you? No? Well it should be!

1) Most movie t-shirts suck – they simply spell out the name, show a shot from the film footage or lumber you with a logo.

2) The fact is even if you don’t think you’re a movie geek you probably are. Here in the UK they show so many films on TV, reruns after reruns, I mean it’s getting to the point where I could do an “I am Legend” and start rolling out the script off by heart for a number of films (not including Shrek which I have managed to avoid so far). Even if the TV is on in another room and I hear a Scorcese bad-a-bing or two I start following the plot. Sheesh I’d even written a movie script once, long time ago, got dropped by Fox Searchlight, don’t ask, too boring an event to recount.

Anyway if you have eyes you are probably a movie geek, I’m telling you, or rather Nerdoh.co.uk is, try this little test and you will see what I mean:-

Do you know the Titty Twister Bar?

Mos Eisley Cantina?

Maybe the Nostromo rings a bell?

What about The Big Kahuna Burger and Jack Rabbit Slims Diner made famous in Pulp Fiction?

What about Shop S-Mart – Bruce Campbell’s employer’s in Army of Darkness or Stark Industries of Iron Man fame or the InGen Corporation who built Jurassic Park? No, really? Nothing rings a bell? Okay forget you, the rest of us are about to wallow in the madness of movie-based reality, where fictional companies run by fictional heros with fictional double-lives make fictional dreams come fictionally true…

Nerdoh has some pretty famous names amongst it’s clients too!

Jonathan Ross remarked that they were “cool shirts”, Tom Savini (actor and horror special effects guru) owns one of their From Dusk Till Dawn designs. Steve Niles (writer and graphic novelist of 30 Days of Night) has one in his wardrobe and super sexy actress Emily Booth cavorts in a Hellraiser skinny from time to time.

Okay the lights are dimming, the stage curtains are drawing back, I’ve paid off the projector guy to skip local taxi cab and curry house ads – here we go!

The Titty Twister tee (sounds painful doesn’t it?) is available for men and women in Nerdoh’s horror movie section of the store. Essentially From Dusk Till Dawn is the greatest film that Quentin Tarantino never made, sure he wrote the screenplay, stars in it alongside George Clooney (he’s actually not bad in this one) and Quentin also co-produced the movie, but he didn’t direct it, that accolade has to go to his old mate Robert Rodriguez of El Mariachi and Sin City fame. The Titty Twister is a run down hell-hole of a bar on the borders of Mexico filled with the dirtiest lowlifes you could never want to meet, plus a bevvy of scantily clad cavorting beauties who all turn out to be vampires. I don’t normally like vampire movies, all a bit namby-pamby for my tastes, I don’t want to watch an interview with one, a love story about one, and all those old Hammer Horrors were so camp it’s unbelievable. Still, this movie rocks and if you want to doubly impress your mates and shock your GF this is the tee to go for… £19 plus free UK postage.

I’d have preferred a reference to the original (mind you not the crappy remake) of the Italian Job with Michael Caine, if you’re not familiar with the infamous line “You’re only supposed to blow the bloody doors off” then watch this. But I have always admired Caine’s work, he actually hated Zulu or rather the casting for it, in the UK he was a pioneer for the cockney gangster actor, essentially apart from a few Kitchen Sink dramas up North hardly anyone who didn’t speak the Queen’s English perfectly made it to the screen, hence Dick Van Dyke’s stupid interpretation of a London accent. Zulu’s director had no idea and cast him as a plummy officer :/ Still all that asides this is a really smart design, very subtle, and who knows it might save you from a beating from a bunch of drunk squaddies in Colchester on a dark night (don’t ask). If you fancy the Zulu tee it’s available for £19 with free UK P&P here.

Maybe my tastes are mutating as I grow older, for some reason I have a soft spot for Milla Jovovich these days, when I first saw her I thought she was a lanky freak, although everyone in Fifth Element looked like a freak, but then she got hold of the leading role in the game to movie franchise Resident Evil and she’s never looked back. I love what she’s done with the trilogy and even though I never really played the game I enjoyed the whole premise to R.E. As usual in most sci-fi movies there is an evil and despotic corporation behind the woes and troubles of the leading character and the world he/she lives in. In this case it’s the Umbrella Corporation, I never did understand how making zombies would be a profitable venture, and as usual it all ended up with proverbial appocalyptic pie in their face.
There’s a very famous scene in Monty Python’s Life of Brian that basically constitutes an argument between members over the name of their political activist group The People’s Front of Judeah, no it’s not the Judean People’s Front, that’s him over there. This tee is a cool adapatation from the movie, I like the detail in Latin which translates as “Romans Go Home”. You can get it for £19 here.
