Free Tee Contest at Sperel
I’ve not come across the Sperels before, all I know is that they’re cute, the kids will love ‘em and Sperel.org are holding a free t-shirt contest right now. Here are the details…
Win a Free Sperel Tee
The criteria is a little dubious, essentially it’s a PR drive to bump up their social network status via Twitter (http://www.twitter.com/savethesperels) and Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/sperels). There are two chances of winning a freebie tee, but both are being kept secret right now. It’s all based on the numbers of followers and fans they get, if they’re after a 100 of each that’s fine, if they’re looking for world domination I’d start handing over some cash too lol.
Winky Boo Tees
Winky Boo is a new t-shirt label, based in the U.S, born of the love and imagination of a doting grandfather for his three playful grandchildren which he nicknamed Winky, Boo Boo and Princess. The brand is a one-woman testament to the wonder of playful imagination we have all experienced in our childhood. Amy. L. Fielder’s given moniker was “Princess” due to her habit of wearing every piece of jewellery she owned (including a crown) wherever she went, her siblings were named “Winky” after her performance as a flying monkey in The Wizard of Oz, and the youngest of the three, “Boo”, after the long suffering conscience of Yogi Bear’s friend/confident Boo Boo The Bear.
Winky Boo is a fitting testament to the wonder of childhood, and a reminder that no matter how old we are in years, we can all feel young again if we merely view the world as we did in those golden days of wonder, when everything we saw and touched was transformed by the power of a youthful imagination. Life’s tapestry is weaved from experience both joyous and painful, but those first few years of innocent play are something that the cynicism of modern society has managed to forget, and Winky Boo is a fine example of how we can once again recapture that wonder of our youth.
Asides the very sweet sentiment, Winky Boo does have a lovely in-house style, with its first three tees in the collection you can already tell they’re going to be popular. They remind me somewhat of the fantastical artwork of The Beatles’ movie Yellow Submarine (one of my all-time faves), rich in colour, and exuding an all pervading sense of youth and vigour that many out there can only find in a bottle of Botox these days. There are four more designs being lined up for the collection as we speak, you can get a sneak preview of them all at Winky Boo’s Facebook page. But for now, let’s take a look at these outstanding examples of what’s in store at Winky Boo.
Jester Tee
Available for men and women in sizes S to XL at $24.99 each, a rather wonderful depiction of a jester, something I used to find rather scary as a kid (oh well each to their own :p). Beautiful colours and line, a little like the “Blue Meanies” meets Victoriana, stylish too!
Elephant Tee
Available for women in sizes S to XL at $24.99 each, as cute as cute can be, who wants a water fight? Yay. With an elephant? Hmmm, where’s that super soaker…
Hats Tee
Available for men in sizes S to XL at $24.99 each, a plethora of mad hatters for your delight, a great design for all those who want to get ahead in life heh. I’d tip mine to Amy if I wore one myself.

Funky Tees For Boys
When I was a kid the best I could come up with as far as t-shirts went was a Scooby Doo tee that crackled the first time it hit the washing machine, within a few weeks I was fighting my mother off as she tried to bin the ugly thing. Fortunately times have changed, men and especially boys get a far less raw deal when it comes to fashion, whether it’s quality or choice. One fine example for boys has to be Mister Mista who specialise in t-shirts for boys, the big difference being this is a “proper” indie label with an in-house designer, a unique range of incredibly well conceived designs, and a devotion to quality screen printing, just how I like it. What’s more each tee is limited to 100 and here’s a really sweet detail, the “background story” to each character is printed on the back of each personalised swing tag. A very nice touch.
Mister Mista are based in Australia, made up of a highly talented husband and wife team, Renee Price having a strong background in marketing, and Travis being a successful illustrator, it seems like the perfect set-up. You can see more of Travis’ illustrations at www.travisprice.com.au. He’s worked with plenty of major agencies and online companies, I think you’ll be impressed. I actually first came across Travis’ work when I spotted this piece featuring Bill Murray as Hermin Blume in the movie Rushmore (a must see!). His work really reminds me of the animator Genndy Tartakovsky – a great talent behind toons like Samurai Jack and Dexter’s Laboratory. If I’ve piqued your interest then check these out:
