One of a few releases by forthcoming graffiti tee (or should that be graffitee?) label Soul Clap Apparel. The site is up and running and the launch party will be April 2011 in NYC. SCA’s gear is illustrated by Skam2 and PROFESONE. Skam2 is best known for his artwork for Grammy award winning rapper Eminem. PROFESONE is currently working on illustrations for Marvel and DC comics. His work is also on display on the Green Lantern album cover featuring acclaimed hip hop artist Styles P.

Heist Tee by Prefab77
Prefab77 is a Tyneside arts/street arts collective with a great deal of respect in the field, at least in the UK. Described by some as ‘The Geordie Faile‘, they’re known for their cut-up and paste up art which you’ll find on sale at Art Republic. Anyway I found a very cool t-shirt by these guys worth seeing, it’s called Heist…
Heist Tee
Very nice, love the edgy subject and check out that uber savvy logo detail on the back! £35 each, screen printed by Prefab77, and the first 20 customers get a free print too! Wowzers.
I think that Pete Manning and the design house Reluctant Hero are somehow connected to Prefab77, could be wrong.
The London Vandal
First off I must declare an interest, or at least an enormous bias, I lived in London for years and have always been a big ol’ fan of street/urban/graffiti art, so as far as I am concerned The London Vandal (urban art blog and collective) could print a poop on a t-shirt and it would still be worth reviewing. What The London Vandal are doing is exactly what I’ve always hoped for the future of the indie t-shirt industry. As soon as street artists began screen printing limited editions of their work to fund those daredevil jaunts around the world I knew it wouldn’t be long before they began to stray into the t-shirt market, especially as they use exactly the same gear to print them up and here’s the proof.
The London Vandal fund their superb urban art showcase site at www.thelondonvandal.com and all their personal exploits on the streets of London with the sales from their unique tees, which have just about all the street cred you could ask for. Damn, Fairey is such a sell out these days we need something other than ripped Banksy’s for our beloved tee collection. Asides the enormous kudos the designs are top-notch, I wouldn’t expect any less from these guys. There are only 3 tees on offer right now, one is designed by the legendary toon tripping Dutch illustrator that is Rick Berkelman. Ironically enough the other two are by French artist Reack, so none are actually by a Londoner (hey I’m an urban artist and I’m in was born London… hint hint lol).
Anyway check ‘em out, they are gorge, and on offer at £17 each in all sizes right now.
The Original Tee (by Rick Berkelmen)
This one is limited to just 150 so I doubt I will be getting a freebie lol. Love it, love Berkelmen’s work, a really nice composition and cute too – which is a rarity for me to say positively – but yes damn it, it’s cute all right? J
Don’t Get Caught Tee (by Reack)
Lovely piece of graffiti inspired illustration from French artist Reack, there’s another one for you in a ‘mo. Good advice too!
Me, Myself & My Ghetto Blaster (by Reack)
One for the Hip Hop lovers, if all else fails at least the music won’t let you down, unless your batteries run out that is :p
All three tees are hand screen printed (yay) on high quality tees for your delectation. Check out the store and the blog for more info.
Bandit-1$M
Borne from the minds of the French creative collective 123KLAN, Bandit-1$M was founded in 2007 by Scien and Klor, recognised graffiti artists who used the label as a way of making a living rather than risking their necks on the street. In French culture street artists deploy what is known as “banditisme” or banditry. The dollar sign represents their descent into the murky mire of capitalism an essential part of human survival. Held aloft under the banner of authenticity and uncompromising style, their t-shirt collection mixes bold designs and smart messages in an array of catchy colours. There are plenty of accessories on offer if you want to go the whole hog including hats, stickers, cushions, posters, wall design and lots more.
The Fall Collection consists of 15 tees and it’s deeply rooted within 123KLAN’s main in-house style including all the usual trademark details – a la mode graffiti icons, strong design and punchier messages. All the tees are presented in a slick palette of muted neutrals (grey, navy, black and white) revived with hints of red and deep orange. Available in unisex, girly and even kids sizes, all the tees are printed on American Apparel.
The collection is presented in an eighteen-page lookbook shot by artist Meka in iconic Montreal locations, and featuring Sylvestre from bike shop Brakeless, artist Yanick Blanchet, writer/blogger Elodie Laetitia and graffiti shop-owner Sino, plus the 123KIDZ. Here are a few of my faves from the ultra-street savvy collection – all available in heaps more colours and styles at $32 each (tax included).

More Tees From The Toilet
Since our last review one of the strangest t-shirt brands in the world LetterFromJohn.com have gone from strength to strength and are back this summer with 12 new filthy t-shirts, (13 more to come soon) designs ripped straight from the walls of unsuspecting public toilets around the world. In case you thought your drunk ramblings in graffiti form were safe from the public, excepting other drunks who happen to read them, think again! John has enough raw images to produce hundreds of more designs at his own discretion – so be warned this is not the last you’ll hear from the pissoir of creativity.
There’s not much to say when it comes to LMF’s tees, they’re all pretty much self-explanatory. Don’t expect the greatest works of art, perhaps the greatest works of humour would be stretching it too far as well, however when it comes to divulging the true primal wants and needs of human nature, you’ll be hard pressed to find anything that cuts so close to the bone. Adoration for narcotics, theological arguments, social comment and anarchistic political views are just some of the subjects covered by John’s tees. So let’s take a trip down to the loos and see what’s floating in the bowl today. read more
Antiphrase Of The Day
Antiphrase.com are a French fashion brand which focuses on providing a creative platform for worldwide artists and designer. Their 100% organic t-shirts are printed with, for the most part, extreme illustrations that feature some truly experimental and graffiti artists including Systaime and Goin. At the moment they have a very select group of designers on their books, each with their own unique style, and subjectively covering all manner of topics from Internet spam, to politics, to dreams, you name it it’s there.
Antiphrase are hot on the ecology too, not only do they print on 100% organic tees, but they use organic ink and even wash resistant tees – essentially so they don’t shrink or fade hence you’ll hold on to them a lot longer and avoid waste! But their love of perfection goes beyond saving the planet, their prints are of an absolutely superb quality, using printed (non-toxic ink) textile technology mastered by Antiphrase means they can reproduce designs with an unequalled graphic accuracy, rendering every stroke and fine line of their artist’s creations. I would say they should take a look at their English translations though, their web copy is a little “iffy”, I mean they get the point across but someone needs to brush up on their Anglais – then again I do suck at French so I’m not one to talk (in just about any language other than English lol). There seems to be another brand jostling for position on the site – Prohibition – but in all honesty it doesn’t really matter unless you’re worried what label says what on your tees, they’re all under the same banner as it were.
Still what really carries the label through is the great selection of t-shirt designs at the store, some are rather unexpected in both concept and style, in general they carry a very strong line in art shirts, well worth checking out. They mainly offer digitally printed tees although there is a small collection of traditional screen print tees, most are limited editions and available for men, women and very soon, kids too. read more
Graffiti, Humour and T-Shirts From The Toilet
I’m surprised we haven’t featured John Tootabeanie’s label before (is that his real name?) – if you’re ever in a seedier public toilet on the bad side of town you might just find yourself trying to pass the time (or block out the experience) of trying to evacuate your bowels in one of the nastiest settings imaginable by scrutinising the bathroom graffiti around you. Well John has gone one step further than that, no actually quite a few leaps and bounds, and set up his own label at www.letterfromjohn.com
Now don’t expect fancy art here, the designs are iconic but you have to remember they are for the main part subconscious scribblings of demented and drunken guys who spend a little too much time on the toilet for my liking – still they’re in your face and some are quite hilarious especially when you think that you one of you out there might just bump into one of the artists in a pub without even realising it. Well you will, because they’ll most likely run over to you sloshing their beer every which way and point at your tee before slurring “I did that, I did, I did that!”.
I’m surprised at the lack of crude references to the dimensions of sexual organs, past girlfriends and other subjects of that nature, well I’m not because I’m sure most toilet graffiti would get this store closed down before it had ever got started. But fear not, it’s not all done in the best possible taste, with a rather fine selection in the obscure, the almost offensive, and the downright bizarre I can tell that John’s tees have caught on already judging by his press page. John is also on the verge of releasing another whopping 30 t-shirt designs, his sources being immeasurable, I can guarantee that a healthy slice of the profits have been devoted to his research into bar toilets for miles around. Then again I have a feeling he has an army of photographers wandering in to toilets all over the world, if you fancy adding to the collection you can submit yours here. Whilst you’re at it take a look at the gallery of original images (in situe) here.
At just $15.95 each his tees are a relative bargain too, so if you want to show the world your love of toilet humour you know where to go. Right now he’s selling his George Bush Eats Babies tee for just $13.95, perhaps a rather historical subject now, but a good choice for posterity? Anyhoo let’s venture into John’s loo and see what’s up for grabs… read more
Word Up To Word Apparel
Deamn Right! Here’s a fresh young label straight from the street for all you homies out there looking for something laid back yet sharp, slick but with a nice line in self-deprecating humour. Great for a night out downtown, or chillin’ with your bro’s, your first stop should be Word Apparel; created, owned and run by Levi based in Houston, Texas. His style, distinctly ghetto, his humour, toon surrealism with a great eye for colour and a great knack for one-liners. This t-shirt collection is not your usual funny ‘ha ha’ eclectic range of old tired japes you’ll normally come across. As you might (or might not) expect from the freshest of the fresh, there’s a distinct blend of the underground street about Word Apparel. Bold prints peppered with touches of pathos and cheek, backed up by an illustrative edge that any self-respecting graffiti artist would have to lay down his cap to, that’s the order of the day at WP. You should expect big things from this lad, and you won’t be disappointed…
As Levi puts it at his popular Myspace joint, “We are always doing something new, focusing on new items to release, and many more things. So check back everyday, you never know what you could miss out on if you don’t! We have your biggest concerns in mind: Quality, Comfort, a “true to size fit”, and LOOKIN’ GOOD! That’s why we only use the highest quality prints and shirts, American Apparel!” read more
