It’s funny, I was just writing about how most funny t-shirts need to improve in the artwork department. Well, here’s another example of why one doesn’t need to compromise another. It’s the latest winning t-shirt at S.A crowdsourcing site Springleap.

Cake and Rockets, a marvellous name for a rather funny yet talented Chicago based t-shirt label. You can read the whole story behind the choice of name here. What I really like about C&R is the fact that unlike too many labels out there who produce ‘funny tees’, they have kept their eye on the ball when it comes to the quality of illustration and design of their latest four tees. Their artists include the awesome Joshua Kemble, the highly talented Tasha Chapman and the supremely intricate Laura Barnard. I’m always getting requests from dodgy t-shirt labels that flood the market with ripped off jokes printed on cheap tees. Cake and Rockets, if there are saints in the t-shirt world, should be the patron saint of funny t-shirt brands. They shine the light and show the way forward for all those lazy poorly designed humour-based t-shirt brands out there.

We’re talking N.Y SoHo and not the kinky one in London here in case you’re wondering. UK illustrator Laura Barnard encourages all you New Yorkers to share in her imagination – no they’re not water towers, they’re rockets. Del Toro Lane

Being a Brit, and an old git, I’ve no idea where Del Toro Lane is. I will take Joshua Kemble‘s word for it that it is indeed brimming with bullfighters :0 6 Colour illustrated tee in sizes S-XL for guys and girls at $19.99 each.

Life Is Short Tee

I’ve just reviewed the work of Dane Thompson at my urban art blog and had to give his awesome t-shirt a plug, so where better than here? I grew up watching Diff’rent Strokes and the inimitable Gary Coleman who died in 2005 from pneumonia brought on by heart surgery. His life was a sad tale to tell, suffering a lifetime of autoimmune disease, his parents ripped him off as a child forcing him to sue, he spent time in prison and his career panned after his early success. Gary Coleman was a real fighter, his amazingly confident performance as Arnold Jackson, the youngest adopted son of the Drummond family saved an otherwise dull TV offering. I didn’t like Diff’rent Strokes as much as Fresh Prince, it was a little less patronising than The Cosby Show, but Gary’s character and his famous catchphrase “What ‘chu talkin’ about?” was a regular greeting at my school for a year or so. Life proceeded to dump on the guy after his short stint of fame (no pun intended) and for many it’s a lesson in how f*cked up the world of fame and celebrity really is.

Less Than Positive

Less Than Positive are a brand new (they sold their first tee on 9/2/11) Singapore-based label after my own he(art), their blurb reads “Incorporating designs that are laced with a tinge of cynicism and subversion, Less Than Positive takes potshots at things common and familiar.” It’s nice to find a fellow ‘pot-shooter’, it’s something I aim to do with my own art. It’s also nice to see a subversive political edge finally breaching the outer security perimeter of a generally decorative market that needs to beef up its agenda in these angry times of recession and depression. All the tees feature photo-montage designs, clean cut and generously printed with a penchant for black and white, and mainly black heh. High-end Floridian designers and screen printers Clack! Industries like to dabble with the occassional personal project from time to time just for a little fun. As it happens they have just released a new tee called the Walken Dead, a fine tribute to the living movie legend that is Christopher Walken. In particular his role as psychic Johnny Smith in the classic Cronenberg pulp horror masterpiece that is The Dead Zone. That’s the original 1983 film and not the bloody awful TV remake. When will TV programmers ever learn?

Christopher Walken is the man, well he used to be. He’s been in at least half a dozen of my favourite movies, he got mixed up in a fake presidential candidacy, and he’s still pretty light on his feet for an old guy. The design is an extraordinary slice of Photoshop goodness, if you’re into zombies this is as classy as it gets. Buy it in S-XXL for $25 (plus $3 for XXL sizes and shipping).

Whilst I’m at it I have to feature their other t-shirt at the store (there are only two). It’s a fantastic parody of the internet phenomenon that is the Three Wolf Moon. It’s not so much the design that took off in a big way as the buyers’ comments which must be some of the funniest sarcasm I have ever read – even if it is the lowest form of humour. For those who need a translation ‘Frit means fries’, so essentially they’re French Fries, haw he haw he haw. Love it. Not keen on the store though, looks like a print on demand site which means you can get the design on just about anything you like, but the t-shirts seem decent enough and start at €16.90 each. 604Republic seem to be running on all pistons right now, they’re knocking out more and more high quality design and are starting to gain some serious clout in the market. Here are their latest tee releases, the first features a gamer’s closet, as opposed to the more usual closet gamer, and the second features none other than those little blue imps that doubled an oil company’s profits whilst subconsciously inferring that only female character Smurfette …is a tramp. Yes you guessed it, those vile blue cretins The Smurfs. I used to collect them as a kid, I think I ended up executing them all very slowly with a large magnifying glass on a particularly hot Summer’s day. Ahh for the memories.

Love it, anything to get my mind off the likelihood that the old skank Smurfette must have been servicing the whole village for over 30 years by now. I’m a big fan of all things zombie related, if you haven’t seen the latest contribution to the genre, check out The Horde (it’s in French – but it’s worth straining with subtitles for pure cinematic zombie mayhem). Baby Tees With A Difference!

Take a look at these absolutely hilarious tees available via French mineral water brand Evian. They’re all available at 30 Euros each, two for the guys, one for the ladies. It’s supposed to be something to do with the “Live Young Community” whatever the hell that is. I guess it’s all a spin-off of their ad campaign by the advertising agency BETC Euro RSCG, who designed the shirts. Ah well, get your nappies on then :D
