LVL Go South
French t-shirt label LVL Clothing have a new collection out for the Summer, it’s called “Sud” which means “South” if you’re not au fait with your Franglais. Anyway, a pretty spicy collection if you ask me, perfect for baffling your less well travelled contemporaries on the beach. All these are available at €29 each in various sizes, but if none of them take your fancy then don’t worry, there are still a few stragglers left in their CRAYON and Bon Appétit Collections! As usual they’re all limited, with the Sud Collection offering just 50 tees for each design…

Antiphrase Of The Day
Antiphrase.com are a French fashion brand which focuses on providing a creative platform for worldwide artists and designer. Their 100% organic t-shirts are printed with, for the most part, extreme illustrations that feature some truly experimental and graffiti artists including Systaime and Goin. At the moment they have a very select group of designers on their books, each with their own unique style, and subjectively covering all manner of topics from Internet spam, to politics, to dreams, you name it it’s there.
Antiphrase are hot on the ecology too, not only do they print on 100% organic tees, but they use organic ink and even wash resistant tees – essentially so they don’t shrink or fade hence you’ll hold on to them a lot longer and avoid waste! But their love of perfection goes beyond saving the planet, their prints are of an absolutely superb quality, using printed (non-toxic ink) textile technology mastered by Antiphrase means they can reproduce designs with an unequalled graphic accuracy, rendering every stroke and fine line of their artist’s creations. I would say they should take a look at their English translations though, their web copy is a little “iffy”, I mean they get the point across but someone needs to brush up on their Anglais – then again I do suck at French so I’m not one to talk (in just about any language other than English lol). There seems to be another brand jostling for position on the site – Prohibition – but in all honesty it doesn’t really matter unless you’re worried what label says what on your tees, they’re all under the same banner as it were.
Still what really carries the label through is the great selection of t-shirt designs at the store, some are rather unexpected in both concept and style, in general they carry a very strong line in art shirts, well worth checking out. They mainly offer digitally printed tees although there is a small collection of traditional screen print tees, most are limited editions and available for men, women and very soon, kids too. read more
New Ironic T-Shirts From Monsieur Steve
Now… if you don’t have an ironic bone in your body you’ll probably find the sentiments of at least one (if not all) of Monsieur Steve‘s t-shirts offensive on many cross-cultural levels, however I’m not the guy to complain to, I’m just the messenger remember. Any complaints should be directed to MonsieurSteve.com…
I’ll start with the worst offender, and although Steve is aiming for perhaps one of the most ironic t-shirts ever made, I somehow doubt the message will come across as such (preparing for WW3 as we speak). I’m guessing that Steve is doing this for all the right reasons (but not necessarily in the right way), seeing as he’s offering a discount to both Muslims and Jews. However, I won’t be making any critical references for any of these t-shirts, because I know I’ll be drawn into the political quagmire that is cultural division and diversity. read more
Weather Girl T-Shirt
Weather Girl T-Shirt by Paul Baines
Weather Girl is the most popular women’s t-shirt I’ve designed (so far!). I suppose I realised early on in my t-shirt design that a lot of my designs appealed to both sexes when I first started to receive comments on my work, thankfully the majority is positive, and after a while I noticed the sales for certain t-shirts including Weather Girl, Speak to the Hand and Barbie Queue were beginning to outstrip sales (especially at CafePress.com) way beyond the usual.
I hardly sell any t-shirts at RedBubble.com as with most of their members, but I’ll keep the faith and continue to promote them because they produce very high quality work and besides the community there are very supportive, if not a little brassic in the deep pockets department. Fair enough, I never entered this industry with unrealistic expectations. What Weather Girl made me realise soon is that I am creating more than a string of t-shirt designs, I’m actually building a brand. The only problem with brands is that atypically a new label will always take some hefty financing to truly make it a profitable business. Some of the major labels have taken years to get into the black. However one can always hope.
If I ever do find the right people, a decent screen-printer, a fantastic marketing wizard, I’d use examples like Weather Girl to show what a great brand we could build together. In the meantime I’ll just keep working hard to replicate the success of t-shirts like this, and hopefully for both sexes!
Weather Girl. Rain is an emotive thing. I was probably staring at the rain pouring down outside the window when I came up with this idea. That and subconscious memories of cartoons as a child, more than likely a Tex Avery piece. It’s a simple way of projecting the idea of sadness, a grey and hovering cloud over an unhappy character. I simply took the idea one step further, and in my own skewed logic felt an umbrella was more appropriate. Some have commented how French this piece looks, which still makes me wonder, does the girl look French, or the rain, or is it simply feeling blue?
