Artistic Green Apparel (1 tee = 1 tree)

This is as about as green as the t-shirt industry can get, a remarkable offer of one tree  planted for every Artistic Green Apparel tee bought. Amazing. I’d love to see this happen with every product out there, and perhaps a small forest for every S.U.V purchased out there. The website design is seriously dated, and that colour scheme something akin to militaristic, but all is forgiven when you realise that not only is their heart in the right place but they have knocked out a few cool t-shirts too ;)

All of their clothing is American Apparel and as mentioned, for each t-shirt a customer buys, they plant one tree (1 tee = 1 tree).  They have recently won $25,000 in the Pepsi Refresh Project and have been using the money to help expand their clothing line and reach. Their business has massively expanded over the past few months and they are definitely looking forward to the future. Their future consisting of more eco tees, plus some sterling work for the environment including recycling drives and park clean ups, a goal of attaining a zero carbon footprint, and for next summer jaunting off to as many music festivals as possible to promote their brand. Now that’s the way to do business, save the earth and still have fun!

Right now I’d say that these two definitely stand out from the collection…

Man o’ Warning Tee

Man o' Warning Tee (Girls)

Man o' Warning Tee (Guys)

The absolutely best tee on the site, a lovely style, reminds me of a few vintage Japanese illustrations I’ve ogled in the past. The story behind the shirt is rather terrifying actually, it looks like the sea has warmed up so much that asides the vast swathes of “plastic soup” drifting in the Atlantic, now it seems that jellyfish are killing everything they can find in the sea. The Brits have already just about lost their stable diet of cod and chips, what now, jellyfish and noodles? Someone pass me a pair of Marigolds and a large net. This tee is available for guys and girls in sizes S-XL at $16.99 each.

No. The Facts Tee

No. The Facts Tee (Guys)

No. The Facts Tee (Girls)

A cool typographic tee with a serious message… “30 billion plastic bottles every year. Less than 5% is recycled. Bottles take 700 years to decompose. 1.04 billion bags per day. Only 1% gets recycled.” Available for guys and girls in sizes S-XL for $16.99 each.

World Party Clothing

This label have literally just launched (6pm last night oops), unfortunately I was so snowed under with emails, posts, work etc., I missed the official moment. Still, I’m sure plenty of you have too so here’s the low-down – World Party Clothing are a fiercely independent streetwear brand from the North of England, in fact they approached us for a review because they appreciate Buy Tees love for the indie brand – which is good to hear! They hand print all their own tees, have strong ethical leanings, every shirt is Fair Trade and all the inks used in the printing process are water based. You know this is a seriously committed brand, they even use 100% recycled envelopes (which are cheaper BTW)!

The subject matter is left field including some environmentalism and an expression of love for the humble bicycle. I have an old Raleigh Chopper downstairs, I really have to get it pimped somewhere so I can ride the damn thing. When Chris and I lived in Bristol in the early 90s I bought us a couple of cheap bikes and we rode all the way to Bath and back, unfortunately by the end of the journey all I had left of my reclaimed Postman’s bike was the bell :/ I ride hard! Still excuses asides we should all be getting on our bikes if we want the planet to survive another few decades! My fave tee of all has to be Wake and Bake which is bloody hilarious, if you’re a stoner you’ll probably snap this one up when you can remember how to use your credit card :D

Get ‘em all for £20 each in all sizes.

Zero Footprint Tees

This one’s just for fun so put your dosh away and if you really want one of these tees:

1. You’re mad, in a very likeable way.

2. You’ll have to make one yourself.

We all know the phrase “art imitating life” but here’s a new one on me… art imitating tees. Dave Rittinger is a highly regarded NY Born / NJ Raised conceptual artist – currently working with two legendary American conceptual artists and sculptors Dennis Oppenheim and Alice Aycock. With Dennis and Alice Dave he has worked on speculative and commissioned public art projects all over the world while continuing to operate on his own conceptual work that embraces various mediums from film to sculpture, installation and still image.

His Zero Footprint shirts are exactly that, well almost, asides the glue they are about as ecological as you can get. You guessed it – they’re made entirely from leaves.

Zero Footprint Tees

Leaf Tee Brown

Leaf Tee Green

Leaf Tee Yellow

Leaf Tee Red

Leaf Tee Purple

A hilarious collection I know, but still, somehow a comment on just how difficult it will be to fix the mess the human race is in right now. I was watching the documentary “Collapse” the other night and thinking on exactly the same lines. If you still want new tees when the oil runs out make sure you have these in your garden:

A cotton field.
A loom.
A large selection of berries and metal oxides for dye.
An optimistic outlook.

Until then – have fun ;)

Anti-Eco T-Shirts

Anti-Eco, despite the name, take the environment very seriously, all their tees are certified 100% organic and printed with water-based inks, their message is always ecological, and the subject for each and every t-shirt questions Man’s relationship with nature and the Earth. Yet they’ve still managed to hold on to their sense of humour, and in fact some of their shirts border on the hilarious. Anti-Eco is based in New York, they hand screen print every t-shirt there and ship around the world (free shipping to the US, Canada and Europe!), they do a nice sideline in Tote bags too, but we’ll stick with the tees. A percentage of each Anti-Eco item purchased is donated to the clean-up and preservation of wildlife in the gulf oil spill. and they update customers on how every dime is spent too.

I’d have to criticize Anti-Eco on their price structure, sure they handle the shipping and everything is hand made but $52 is way too step for a t-shirt, organic or not. Still, there’s always hope the guys will hold a sale in the near future? (Hint). If you’re sick and tired of the same well-meaning, hippified “Save The Earth” tees on offer just about everywhere these days, then you’ll probably appreciate Anti-Eco’s rather twisted sense of humour – even if you don’t appreciate the pricing!

A Little Radiation Brightens My Day Tee
A Little Radiation Brightens My Day Tee

I’m not as big a fan of the sun as I used to be, I spend more time at this screen or in the studio than out in the sun, but even I appreciate the sentiment. When people freak out about radiation they should take in to account it’s everywhere, here and in space, and there’s no getting away from it. Just try not to take your next vacation in Chernobyl… Get this tee at a whacking great $55 (ouch) in sizes XS-XL in black here.

Unnatural Inorganic All Fat Tee
Unnatural Inorganic All Fat Tee

I am a lapsed veggie, I spent a few years of my late-teens eating Quorn and Soy and didn’t touch a piece of meat till my 20s, however I hated vegetables at the time that didn’t help. When strangers started handing me pamphlets about annorexia I knew I had to turn to the dark side. Looking at my waistline it’s probably time to try again, although the smell of bacon kicks the crap out of lentil soup every time. Get this tee at a painful $55 in sizes XS-XL in white here.

Global Warming Sounds Comfy Tee
Global Warming Sounds Comfy Tee

For those who don’t understand how global warming can eventually lead to an ice age it’s time to go back to school. The fact is there are plenty of countries out there, including Britain, that suffer from crappy weather all year round (except for a few brief weeks of summer if we’re lucky), but the truth is if the world keeps heating up it’ll mean ocean currents like the Gulf Stream will be weakened just as it was 10,000 years ago when the temperatures across Europe dropped by 10°. Still it’s true, Global Warming does sound comfy lol.  Get this tee at a recession-ignorant $55 in sizes XS-XL in moss here.

Tasty Green Tees From PLB

PLB Eco TeesPier-Luk Bouthillier, the man behind PLB at www.plb-store.com, one of Montreal’s most popular independent green t-shirt labels, has an impressive CV. After a stint as Art Director for the cultural weekly ‚ÄúICI Montreal‚Äù, he began freelancing under the name ‚ÄúPLB Design‚Äù. For over a decade Pier has worked alongside some major advertising agencies, collaborating on projects ranging from design of promotional material for theatre companies and stage productions, to identity and logo design, product advertisements, packaging and website design.

In 2007, he launched his first in a series of environmentally-themed T-shirts. Sales of the T-shirts, in collaboration with the “Crazy Lily” boutique have been a rip-roaring success. His “Protect Nature” design has already sold over 600 units (and counting) worldwide. The in-house style of Pier and the PLB is stark and uncompromising, almost modular in appearance, each t-shirt plainly and clearly spells out an aspect of the environmental cause with the professionalism he has garnered whilst working on big budget commercial and corporate projects throughout his varied and impressive career.

Expect no compromises, this is a fashion label you will either love or you won’t, far removed from the stereotypical image of ecological fashions, Pier-Luk offers a limited range of confident, chic, and for the right market highly desirable t-shirts that suit the progressive and career-minded go-getters of the 21st century. Whilst still affording them some form of assurance that they are in some way helping to “spread the message” that unless the world starts changing its habitual obsession for consumerism and waste, it may just be the last years of so-called civilisation. Designer eco-tees that look more at home on the back of a model on a catwalk than a hitch-hiking hippie – that’s the name of the game with PLB.

Pier-Luk has melded his passion for design and concern for the environment to produce a range of t-shirts that suggest the sustainability of design as much that of the Earth’s resources. Offering the consumer an opportunity to take “baby steps” towards a greener society via “intelligent consumption” integrated with a healthy respect for the environment. The iconography of PLB’s products reflect this balance, viewing good design as a fusion of aesthetics and functionality in harmony with one another. Each tee has been printed with water-based inks, although I would’ve thought that they would all have to be made from recycled cotton or hemp to fulfil PLB’s objective of promoting themselves as a purely ecological t-shirt label. Something I am sure that Pier will be considering as we speak? It would be most ironic to think that PLB was actually damaging the earth in able to promote it’s sustainability! read more

Proletarian Threads – Come The Revolution!

Proletarian ThreadsCome the revolution there’s only one place I’d recommend buying your t-shirts – if it doesn’t go against your Marxist principles :) – and that’s ProletarianThreads.com. Now as many of you might have guessed I’m a bit of a lefty myself, an all-round trouble maker and I have always had a soft spot for those with similar leanings. PT tick all the right boxes for me, and then some, they produce and sell some of the snazziest sweatshop-free, political, feminist and generally revolutionary t-shirts this side of The New World Order, and this side being the losing side (for the time being anyway).

If you want to guarantee avoiding being lined up against the nearest wall and shot by a revolutionary firing line, should the day come that the world governments finally lose it and the people rise up and take back everything they can get their hands on, including their human rights, land, and the means of production from the Bourgeoisie then PT is probably a good bet. Although I’m not as hot on Marxist theory as I was in my student days I’m sure that PT count as part of the merchant classes and hence members of the bourgeoisie but I wouldn’t hold that against them, I mean who actually toils in the fields these days, that’s what combine harvesters are for aren’t they?

Three Cheers for Eco Gear!

Ecogear's t-shirt lifecycleI’ve featured ecological t-shirt sites at Buy Tees before, but Canadian-based Eco-Gear.ca has to be the most ethical and ecologically aware t-shirt manufacturer and printer in the world. I was going to wait until I’d collated a few more sources for organic t-shirt suppliers/printers because I’ve had a few requests for more lists, but I couldn’t let this wait.

Here’s a quick rundown of Ecogear‘s amazing ethical and environmental credentials:

- recycled materials in pre-consumer cotton clippings and recycled water bottles( 65% cotton and 35% recycled PET )
– least water and energy needed to produce the fabric
– no bleach or dyes used. Their colours are from the first life cotton clippings.
– no land use for agriculture or need for deforestation
– for their printing processes, instead of being back end conscious and filtering all wastes, they are front end conscious and only use dyes that are either organic or water based. No PVC, pthalates or APEOs.
