The Joys Of Despair – Despair Wear
Despair.com are probably most famous for their demotivational posters, they look very similar to those awful motivational posters you used to find in any office obsessed with team building, but their t-shirt collection is coming on very nicely and I thought it was about time to take another peek at what their offering up.
They’ve dumped almost all of the poster clone tees and gone for some very slick and at times very funny humour t-shirts, a lot of them seem to fall into two camps, either the government (and especially the economic mess we all find ourselves in today) and the Internet, that might not sound too sexy to a lot of readers but I assure you they’ve turned out a rather fine series of witty tees a cut above the usual. It’s nice to see they’re developing more and more ‘non-boxy’ designs, a lot of their older ones used to be printed at the same proportions of their posters which meant one rectangular image after another, not so now though.
Then again there are quite a few cool slogan tees too, such as Time For Action which reads ‘The Time For Action Is Past. Now is the time for senseless bickering’ and their Corruption shirt which states ‘End Corruption. Or at least let me participate in it’. But as you might have guessed I’ll focus on their newer range of cooler, hipper, brighter, bolder graphic tees which have taken the brand in a new direction of visually pleasing lower than low humour. Life is filled with misery, it’s nice to see a label being honest about it for once, and with such as sharp tongued wit and an infectious attitude towards the bleak reality of much of society, I’m sure their following which is already pretty much massive by most people’s measure, will only grow and grow. read more
Despair.com T-Shirts – The Party’s Over – Let’s Get Down…
The world is on a downer, it’s true. The world economy is breathing its last breath, all vital resources are running out, our post-war capitalist dreams are turning into one great big nightmare, we haven’t got long to play before the whole of society will have to take stock and cut-back and get real. In the meantime there are a few bright sparks out there spreading the word of misery, accounting the disappointments we all share and feeding them back into the loop. Some of them can be found at Despair.com
I only discovered this site two days ago, if you have a blindly chipper outlook on life Despair isn’t for you. If you always prefer to talk up a situation, if you enjoy spinning positivity for the common good, don’t choose despair. Their t-shirts don’t offer a pessimistic outlook on life, but they are realists, Despair’s focus is precise and brutal, down-to-earth and matter-of-fact, yet always tinged with that bitter-sweet humour that only the wonders of irony can provide.
You won’t find anything pretty at their site, this isn’t a visual parade of fantasy and craft, this is all about functionalism and delivering the message. Demotivation is not such a bad thing after all, it can help you slow down and take stock of reality as it is and not as the media portrays it, or your greatest wishes command it, or what you’d simply like to hear. Just plain old ugly truth. read more
