Das Monk have returned with their latest collection, after cogitating on the deeper meanings of life, the universe and the collective works of acclaimed late director Stanley Kubrick their attention has turned to everything from war to deep space exploration to ultra-violence and futuristic narcotics by the way of such classic movies as Dr. Strangelove, A Clockwork Orange and 2001: A Space Odyssey. Designer Marc Hendrick and his faithful team of artists including Tim Laing, Evan Meister, Daniel Brereton, and Lydia Ortiz have all contributed to the latest offerings from the inimitable divine hermit of fashion, Das Monk.

DM have been going from strength to strength since our last review, now selling in stores in over 30 stores worldwide. Their reputation for the meticulously psychedelic and cold surrealism are garnering greater and greater audiences across the globe, with fans in Japan, Australia, New Zealand, USA and Canada, their tees have been given the official cult seal of approval by big music scene names such as Diplo, Busy P, The Cool Kids and Tiga. It’s been a while since we’ve featured the Das Monk t-shirt label and seeing as they’ve just released a brand new collection this seems the most opportune moment. As always Das Monk’s founder and designer Marc Hendrick has pulled out all the stops in order to wow his loyal following and the t-shirt buying public at large. Over recent years Das Monk has expanded into an international fashion label, now being stocked in 20 major stores across the USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. Experimentation is always at the forefront of the label’s raison d’√™tre, and in more recent times collaboration has too been the name of the game.

The latest symbiosis of talent and style comes from the infusion of Designer Marc Hendrick’s collaboration with international artists Zach Johnsen (US), Tim Laing (UK), Evan Meister (US), and Keenan Marshall Keller (US) for the unique designs in this latest collection. Hendrick’s unique choices in approach and style for the Das monk label have given rise to a cult following over recent years with cult music industry names like MGMT, TV on the Radio, Lupe Fiasco, A-Trak, Van She and Justice all backing the brand’s indomitable rising power in the field of tees.

Combining new designs with old favourites the latest collection is themed as a ‘Midnight in the Mojave’ depicting a story of bad trips, drifters, and desert dreaming in the void of the desert landscape and urban drop-out mythology. Continuing its post-modern take on 21st century psychedelia, tinged with the down-to-earth pain and hardship of a life on the rocks, infusing the bizarre, the irreverence and foresight of yet another lost generation. Das Monk was born of the union of t-shirt love by two t-shirt fanatics Marc Hendrick and Anna Lunoe almost a year ago. They are currently in the midst of selling out their second collection of tees right now. They plan to showcase a new and limited edition collection of t-shirts every 3 months and offer a unique homespun style informed as much by the Arts and Crafts movement as by the modern life and modern street culture of Europe and beyond.

The two members of Das Monk came up with their label’s name one starry night, as Marc and Anna ran through all the possibilities they found themselves favouring the word ‘Monk’ because it’s short and succinct and represents a figure of deep contemplation using simple means to communicate something more. The German word ‘Das’ (meaning ‘the’) was added by Marc who is of German descent. read more
