Baby Monster Tee

Check out this little oddity, cute but rather terrifying, I expect to see big things in the future from the spanking new Brit t-shirt label Brutal Manic Apparel . I also expect to see small things, ugly things, mutant things and well you get the picture ;) Here’s what they have to say for themselves:

“The aim has always been to take the doodle style artwork and transform it into something awesome and fashionable. Our original goal was to solely create the designs and then sell them to bands, but we later realized that we wanted to sell the stuff ourselves instead and from their Brutal Manic Apparel was formed. Our goal is to grow and grow with lots of fresh new designs that UK stores really seem to lack in accomplishing for some reason.”

A rather strange blend of cute and abhorrent oozes from every pore of BM’s Baby Monster Tee. Kinda’ like aww… ahhh… uuugh…. arrgghhh! A lavishly doodled yet uniquely weird t-shirt available for guys and girls at £12 each in various sizes and colours.

Confound Clothing

British t-shirt brand Confound at ConfoundYourFriends.com has only been running a month but they’ve already got three strong designs on offer and are offering worldwide delivery so you can tell they’re serious. Created by Dean Claydon, James Hayday and John Greene. They first met at high school in Essex, the three have featured in multiple bands together before all moving on to university. Now either graduates or entering their final year, their passion is to build a fashion brand that literally ‘confounds’ the expectations of the mainstream. Within weeks of launching the site they’re marketing the label hard, grabbing favours wherever they can, and adding on all those little extras you expect from more established indie labels. There are even free wallpapers of their designs on offer.

Right now Confound are looking for new artists if you fancy touting your wares to this savvy trio, there’s a great feature on the process of design at their label and details on how to submit your own here. If you’d rather leave the hard work to others and simply keep up with all the latest goings ons including new designs and special offers then you can contact them via Facebook, Twitter or read up at their blog. In the meantime check these three tees out…

Float On Tee

Float On Tee (Girls)

Float On Tee (Detail)

Cute, probably not the strongest design of the three but the illustration has been given something of a gentle touch, which I’m sure will appeal to girls. Reminds me a little of movies like E.T and Le Ballon Rouge. I’d scrap the text, or at least improve the typography, it looks like a generic handwriting font. Something that “rises before the eyes” would make more sense, like steam perhaps, although steam isn’t known for either being easy to write with or draw lol. Still nice, a nice design, a warm feeling tee with a night time slant by one of Confound’s founders Dean Claydon from Essex who  usually specialises web based design but dabbles with illustration from time to time too! Get it for £13.99 in sizes S-L.

Shark Bite Tee

Shark Bite Tee (Guys)

Shark Bite Tee (Detail)

It’s the classic JAWS get out clause, if you’ve got a killer shark on your tail throw something explosive or at the very least combustible in its mouth and shoot! Not sure if dynamite functions as well when its wet but the composition is strong and the timer is a nice touch. I’d have liked to have seen the tail on the back of this tee, but that’s a little tricky for a new label. Still am I the only one who still likes all-over printing? Nevertheless a bold design by Sarah Yu London based illustrator, character and graphic designer, the girl definitely has talent, look at those creepy eyes and perspective of the nose and teeth, cool. Get it in all sizes for men and women at £13.99 each.

Howling Wolf Tee

Howling Wolf Tee (Girls)

Howling Wolf Tee (Detail)

This is their best-seller and you can tell, it’s a really strong design, but lightly illustrated to appeal to girls and guys, it’s rare to find greys in a t-shirt print these days but it works. Moody but not too moody, the wolf really has some character. Designed by Holly Ringsell a talented young illustrator and photographer from the South East of England. Get it in all sizes for £13.99 each.

You can order any of these from just about anywhere in the world, the shipping costs are free for the UK, £5 for Europe and a very reasonable £7.50 for the rest of the world. Take a closer look at Confound Clothing at www.confoundyourfriends.com.

Sneak Peak At Seventh Ink’s Fall Collection

Here’s a real quickie for you, my mate at 7th Ink Matthew Johnson, has sent me over some sneak preview pics from their blog at FuryShirts.com which should give you a clue to the quality and creepy splendour of their Autumn/Fall Collection simply entitled “The Haunted Collection”. A little bit scary but a lot of fun too, these are sure to fly off the shelves like a Poltergeist ;) This is just the first series in the collection and although the t-shirts won’t be limited as such, they will run out and there will be a delay of at least a month for the next batch. So if you fancy something a little more spooky for the end of the Summer do keep your eyes peeled over their way.

Rocket Tee by 718 Project

Chris from 718 Project contacted me recently, I hadn’t heard of the label before but was immediately drawn to one of their tees simply called ‘Rocket‘.

Rocket Tee (White)

Rocket Tee (White / Detail)

Rocket Tee (Yellow)

Rocket Tee (Yellow / Detail)

Damn! Ain’t they beautiful! Seriously street art influenced tees with a superb sense of humour, laid out in a cool semi-abstract composition. Seriously these tees are going to fly off the proverbial shelves – no pun intended! Both colours are available in sizes S-XL for $19.95 each, definitely one of my new faves.

You can see the rest of 718Project’s tees at www.718project.com. Whilst we were chatting I got a little background info on the label and their motivation:

Formed by a group of friends with an aversion to the countless and mostly unimaginative tattoo tees and rhinestone shirts out there. The 718 Project is founded on the love of powerful eye-catching graphic art, and printing them up as tees that really can grab the public’s attention.

I asked them about the name “718 Project” and Chris told me: “We all have some sort of tie to the outer boroughs of New York; mainly Queens. Also whenever anybody refers to NYC the first thing that comes into mind is the Empire State Building, the Statue of Liberty, skyscrapers… in other words MANHATTAN ( which ironically is the only borough of NYC that has a 212 area code as oppose to 718 like the other 4 boroughs.) So our objective is to show the fashion world of the artistic influences the outer boroughs have toward NYC as a whole. That even though the fashion Mecca of the world is Manhattan; Queens, Brooklyn, Bronx and Staten Island also play a major role into what comes out of the big city.

I’ve always championed the indie arts scene of NYC, I am the first to express my hatred for the B.S that comes out of mainstream NYC (a.k.a the abomination that was Sex in the City). If you want to know the real deal when it comes to New York street style, then the 718 Project is a great place to start. This definitely is a “project”, an ongoing experiment in art and fashion, aiming, quite rightly to change the mainstream public’s perception of what New York is all about, straight from the people on the street rather than the executive boardrooms of the ivory towers of Manhattan.

Their inspirations include “pin-up girls, influential pop culture, propaganda and movie posters, and of course street art and graffiti.” Here’s 718′s mission statement to seal the deal: “”Introduce yourself to the name that will bring the streets of New York home. Bred from street art and refined through fashion, this wearable art yells in the colors of the city. In an effort to bring originality to a market of recycled fashion, our company will open your minds to an innovative style.

Check out the rest of their collection at www.718project.com.

New Tees At Disturbia

Perhaps my favourite indie British t-shirt label has just released its Autumn/Winter collection of tees and yet again there are a few blinders on offer. If you love your colours day-glo and your illustration beautiful but gory, then you have to check out the new designs at Disturbia Clothing. They’ve even redesigned the whole site (yet again), I loved the old Marshall Amp style theme they had going on there but I have to admit their new logo is so crazy, so insane, I am more than duly placated on the shift in branding.

I’ve noticed I still haven’t wangled a permanent voucher code off these guys for our discounts section, I asked them a year or so ago but things were looking to tight at the time. Still, they seem to be on the up and up so fingers crossed I can get you lucky lucky people some savings real soon! In the meantime have a slaver over these Gothic beauties, all these tees are available in all sizes for guys and girls at £22 each… gore was never as beautiful as it is at Disturbia!

Vague Tee

Vague Tee

If a blog is a marriage then I’m a bad husband, I know I neglect the girls here and should feature more tees for them, I suppose asides being a typical guy it comes down to all the choice women have in fashion blogs compared to guys. Still… could do better. Which is why I wanted to start off by featuring Disturbia’s Vague Tee. Yes it’s available for guys as well, but I predict this will be their biggest seller yet as a girl’s tee, it’s got it all, fashion, glamour, cynicism, and a general despair at the media and its divisive methods of making them feel dowdy with the aid of anorexics and computer magic.

Sirens Tee

Sirens Tee

Sirens Tee (Womens)

Wowzers. Here are three babes, most likely belonging to the undead persuasion, so dutifully and intricately drawn it almost seems a shame to throw it in the wash. There are tees I wear to death, one of them happens to be a Disturbia t-shirt, this could well be another. Ouch, so good it hurts. Amazingly designed, the Sirens Tee is available for men and women at £22 each.

Zoltar Tee

Zoltar Tee (Womens)

Zoltar Tee

Ever since seeing the cornball comedy launchpad for Tom Hanks career, the prospect of finding a Zoltar Machine like the one that’s featured in the movie ‘Big’ has haunted me. It’s probably the best arcade machine that was ever made, so creepy, so pointless. If I had so much money I didn’t need worry about the bills I’d hook up one of these to a stock market picks site and make a fortune. Of course if I could invent one that could promise eternal youth that would probably pull in a little more profit :p Cool as ****, as usual Disturbia have excelled themselves and they were already doing that before. This tee rocks… it rocks hard. Get it for girls and guys for £22 each in all sizes.

Arteefact

John from Arteefact, a brand new t-shirt label contacted me yesterday for a review. Uniquely they hold no stock, instead, when they receive an order they plot it, weed it and transfer it on a t-shirt especially for you. Each of their tees comes with a unique number printed on the back, and they even offer custom designs. Now, I’m not known as a fan of vinyl tees, I’d take water-based printing over heat press every time, it’s better for the environment and feels much nicer to wear, but who knows, you might think differently.

Amongst their slightly shambolic first collection are some real beauties, I adore their Determination T-shirt, which again is an abstract design, not my favourite kind, but this one seriously works. On the other hand there are a few I’d rather skip. Over all I’d suggest the collection needs some work to get going. The designs that do work are strong, the store is beautifully laid out, and their commitment to a more personalised service is very reassuring, I just wish there was a way I could convert them to a more eco-friendly approach, something that would add to their mounting kudos rather than detract from it. Still, there’s definitely talent at Arteefact, check these shirts out to get my drift…

Determination Tee
Determination Tee

Determination Tee (Yellow)
Determination Tee (Green)

Not only is this a fantastically visual abstract design, it’s enabled Arteefact to be incredibly sparing with the vinyl which is most definitely the direction they should follow if they want to stick with heat press tees. There’s a real iconic dynamism to the look of this one, almost leaving you hanging in expectation. I want to see a lot more like this one in the future. The Determination Tee is available in 3 colours in sizes S-XL for €28 (Free Shipping) here.

Free Yourself From The Prototype Tee

Free Yourself from the Prototype Tee
Free Yourself from the Prototype Tee (Blue)
Free Yourself from the Prototype Tee (Black)

I’m not keen on the text in this one, but I do appreciate the sentiment and the design is again very sparing, I’d focus more on making the image express an idea rather than “backing it up” with a slogan, however it’s still a very cool idea. The Free Yourself from the Prototype Tee is available at €35 (Free Shipping) each in 3 colours here.

Full Face Tee

Full Face Tee

Full Face Tee (Womens/Black)

Loving the vector stylings in this design, a beautiful use of line and sparingly laid out for maximum contrast. I prefer it in black as it really does stand out a treat. The Full Face Tee is available in black and white for men (€28) and  women (€30) in all sizes (Free Shipping).

I’m sure that Arteefact will think I’ve been a little harsh, but if I can steer them in a more eco-friendly direction now, it could spell the difference between survival and even failure as a brand and the chance of breaking into a far wider market and growing a cult following into something big, at least in the indie t-shirt world. Anyway… take a look for yourself and make your own minds up at www.arteefact.com.

New Tees By Maiden Voyage

If you’re more olde worlde than old skool you might remember our post in March about the Maiden Voyage Clothing Co. One of our only criticisms at the time was their Adobe Flash site which asides making it difficult to access for those on slower connections and crappy cell phones, the fact is reviewers like myself can’t poach pictures from their store so easily, so I for one am glad to see they’ve updated (or should that be downgraded?) their store back to lovely cuddly HTML. On a far less geeky tack, do have a butchers at their latest offerings in t-shirt form, yet again no doubt with the aid of some kind of time travelling device, MVC have captured the essence of the past, delving into the curios and curiosities of history to come up with these potential classics available in all sizes from £32 each…

Dark And Stormy Night Tee
Dark and Stormy Night Tee

I hate to say it but it’d be nice to see some larger product images at the site and perhaps some more competitive prices, oh well, perhaps I should’ve mentioned that last time. On a side note, I think the model is superb, if anyone is going to sail the ship through stormy waters, it’s this old codger. Anyway do take a look at the rest of MVC’s tees (and handmade leather products if you fancy a new wallet – even if you have nothing to put in it) at www.MaidenVoyageClothing.com.

3 New Tees At Infinite Now

Graphic savvy Infinite Now have just released three new tees (well two if you want to be absolutely technically pedantically precise about these things), two logo t-shirts and one rather jolly little number featuring an octopus. I remember a few years back when octopuses were sprawling all over the t-shirt world, perhaps it was the lure of drawing all those suckers, who knows, all I know is IN are reviving an old favourite of mine and how…

8 Ways Tee

Blackout Tee

Knockout Tee

All three tees, 8 Ways, Blackout and Knockout are available in sizes S-XL at $25 each, printed on super soft American Apparel shirts. Check them all out at www.infinite-now.com!

T-Shirt Wars

If you haven’t seen the original t-shirt war video by Internetainers (don’t blame me they made it up) Rhett & Link then check this out:

Since then they’ve been plucked from obscurity (if you can call 4 million views on Youtube obscurity) and snapped up by evil corporations to do their bidding in order to increase obesity and tooth decay across the world. I say world but I’ve never seen this ad in the UK so I guess it’s only for the eyes and pockets of N. America:

Ah well who can blame them, they’ve hit the big time even if it is on the back of a Coke and McDonalds advertising campaign. What’s really cool about their vids (asides from the fact that they features so many tees) is that they’re relying on old school animation techniques, slavishly taking photos of every t-shirt and effect in stop-frame motion. Yes, every t-shirt in each of these videos is real, there’s no Photoshop trickery involved. In fact they must have made a tidy bundle of money or at least a whole heap of free PR for their local t-shirt printers. If you want to see how they did it then take a look at this video:

I love t-shirt videos, if you do too then I suggest you subscribe to Rhett & Link’s Youtube Channel!
