Tees That Don’t Suck!

Suck! Clothing are based in Italy and sell their funky t-shirts via their online store at www.suckmystar.bigcartel.com. First off I don’t know if the meaning got lost in the translation but I guarantee you one thing, Suck! Clothing doesn’t suck! In fact quite the opposite, their wild style designs and jampacked with strong colours, memorable designs and a great sense of humour. They seem to take their inspiration from everywhere including bad movies like Teenwolf, abstract and graffiti art, outer space, and surreal cartoons. Their latest and highly confident collection opens up a vista of Italian design sensibility that’s distinctly different to much on offer in the USA dominated t-shirt market.

Check out their video promo for their Sping/Summer 2010 collection, it’s not too informative but the music is cool heh.

Check out these tees:

Wayne’s World T-Shirt

Wayne's World T-Shirt

The Wayne’s World T-Shirt says it all. If you still find yourself mumbling “Wayne’s World! Party time! Excellent!” from time to time, probably reluctantly and with a smidgeon of guilty pleasure then come out of the proverbial heavy metal closet and proclaim your love for this celluloid tribute to iffy rock and bad jokes. I don’t know what it is about Mike Myers, his movies, especially Austin Powers, seemed so funny at the time, nowadays they grate on my nerves. Still the t-shirt rocks, a great sense of perspective and superb old school colours. Get this tee for guys in sizes XS to L for $31. PLUS get a free limited edition hand numbered Wayne’s World poster (applies to first 100 customers).

Teenwolf T-Shirt

Teenwolf T-Shirt

I like this one, hate the film mind you, but I like this shirt. Probably the smartest piece of brand placement I’ve ever seen, a great lesson for budding designers trying to think of a name for their label, make sure you can use your logo in your designs! College does suck, or rather it did when I was there, not as much as school mind you, not even as much as work, but sure, it sucks. Love the font on this one, looks like something out of a bad horror comedy, oh yeah it is heh. The face needs some work, if that is supposed to be Michael J. Fox under all that fur? I give it a 7/10, would give it a 9 if they sort that face out. Get the Teenwolf T-Shirt for $31 for guys in all sizes. Get a free movie poster with this order too…

Candies T-Shirt

Candies T-Shirt

Here’s a cutie for the girls, it’s called the Candies T-Shirt and the reasons why are self evident. Those lollipops look so real I wouldn’t be surprised if Suck! has deliberately stuck real ones on there to mess with your mind. If you have an extremely sweet tooth then you can get this tee for girls in sizes S to L for $25.

1969 T-Shirt

1969 T-Shirt

A lot of stuff happened in 1969, first off I was born the day before on New Year’s Eve, the world had succumbed to Moon madness, and everyone thought we’d be living there by now, don’t ask me why, I’d want to visit, but I wouldn’t want to live there. The hippies started kicking off, they’d come down off their seemingly inexhaustible supply of LSD and free love and started getting shot by bikers. Iggy Pop’s Stooges made a great song about the year, it doesn’t tell us much except that just maybe that the people were sick of putting flowers in their hair and wanted to riot a la the French. Cool t-shirt, nice sentiment, get the 1969 T-Shirt for guys at $25 in sizes XS to L.

A Trip Back in Time – Maiden Voyage Clothing

I bumped into these guys on Twitter and was immediately besotted with their site. Normally I don’t approve of website music but I have to admit it adds to the oldie-worldie atmosphere at Maiden Voyage Clothing although if the Laurel and Hardy in Egypt old-time jazz tune is starting to grate then you’ll find an on/off switch bottom right of the screen. There are only four designs on offer right now, but I’m guessing that they haven’t been going long, and besides they are rather cool so give them a break. BTW I can’t provide links to each tee, it’s a Flash site however they are in the process of redesigning the website in a more traditional and link friendly fashion.

MVC definitely want evoke a times past, a culture of tall ships and tall stories. Everything from the music, the store design and the tees themselves seem more akin to the turn of the 20th Century than the 21st. They’ve really put a lot of thought into the whole set up, and I’d imagine if they packed the store with more top-notch t-shirts they’d build themselves a rather respectable following. The name was inspired by the excitement and endeavours of a slice of history where every trip was a big adventure, be it via Zeppelin, ship or propeller driven plane, most likely you’d be one of if not the first to visit your destination in that fashion.

A slice of history where fantasy and reality merged quite frequently, still following a tradition for, let’s shall we say exaggerating, be it the splendour of lost cities, the size of unknown creatures or a race of giants, the abundance of gold and other precious finds. At this, perhaps in hindsight one of the most exciting times in history suffered from a Chinese whisper syndrome, exaggeration was infection, the world of mass-communication hadn’t quite arrived yet and many adventurers did have a habit of fibbing.  MVC want to recapture that spirit of mystery and excitement for the undiscovered, something we on this overcrowded world sadly lack these days. Roll on the space age I say.

Bears in Tandem T-Shirt

Bears In Tandem Tee

Bears in Tandem Tee (Back)

The Bears in Tandem tee is probably my favourite, available for $28 in sizes XS to M. I love the use of all-over printing and the illustration itself is rather gorgeous. Fur is a tricky texture to draw in monotone. Nice sepia effect too.

Fishtachio T-Shirt

Fishtachio Tee

Here’s a lovely piece of surrealism in the form of the imaginatively titled Fishtacio. The fish leaping through the loops of the tash and the subtle lines marking out the reflection really add to the design. Available for guys in sizes XS to XL for $28.

Flagship T-Shirt

Flagship Tee

Flagship Tee (Blue)

Aptly enough the Flagship tee features an impressively drawn clipper ship in both white (XS to XXL) and blue (XS to XL), both available for $28. A very slick piece of old fashioned etching style illustration. A really smart incorporation of the brand too.

You can visit Maiden Voyage Clothing’s store at www.MaidenClothingCompany.com or keep up with them at Twitter.

Earth-Rise T-Shirt by Public Domain Clothing

Earth-Rise T-Shirt

“Houston we have a problem…”

Earth Rise T-Shirt by Public Domain Clothing

OMG I love it. Isn’t this the best piece of paranoid NASA conspiracy bad trip fashion you’ve ever seen? Well actually it’s the first I’ve ever seen and I love it. If there’s one thing we could all do with it’s more scary astronauts. Seriously though Public Domain Clothing, the auteurs of kook and wry cynical humour in the world of t-shirts have really upped their game with the Earth-Rise t-shirt. A phenomenal piece of trompe l’eoil and a superb tee. I love the the thought that with just a little Photoshop jiggery pokery you can subvert reality as we know. One for the record books in t-shirt weirdness you can get this superb shirt in black for $25 in sizes S to XL.

Teextile – A Rip Off?

Teextile Sucks!I’ve received quite a few emails and  comments regarding Teextile.com‘s terrible track record of snatching people’s money for nothing and I think it’s long due that I take up the gauntlet on behalf of all of those who have been let down by this company. When Teextile first approached me last year for a review everything seemed fine, I had no reason to suspect that this t-shirt community unlike many others out there would end up as the spectacular failure that they truly are. I’ve tried to play Devil’s Advocate, especially after I received a begging letter from them a few weeks ago asking me not to write this post i.e not to criticise their business practices, in order that they would have a chance at fulfilling at least a few more of their outstanding orders. The fact is they have failed to rectify anything promised in their recent email, stating that they’d realised their error, had redesigned the site as Teextile 2.0 and were busy making up for all the trouble and anger they have caused amongst those who had paid for one of their shirts.

The argument that each is only out of pocket by $7 isn’t really the point, I can understand many thinking hey $7 is hardly anything, but if that’s the case why haven’t Teextile simply refunded all those who have still not received their tees? Here’s the latest comment regarding Teextile submitted today at Buy Tees:

I ordered 1 T-shirt 2 weeks ago and never received yet. My order # does not work on the web page so I tried emailing everyday. They have yet to answer. I did some research and saw that the last complaint on BBB was on Feb 23, 2010. With so many complaints, they need to be exposed immediately. If you’ve been ripped off…..even for $7, please take the time to file on bbb.org

Don’t bother emailing them at info@teextile.com or orders@teextile.com……you’ll get a return email “failure to send”. If that’s not fishy enough…..I don’t know what it? Teextile is really a bogus company taking our money for FREE! It’s not fair for us hard working customers.

Buy Tees were advised to tell our readers to use the above email addresses to contact Teextile and ensure they receive their tees or at least a refund. However if it’s true that they are now blocking emails from their customers then it goes hand in hand that Teextile are trying to dodge their financial liabilities. It is their legal responsibility to refund each and every customer who hasn’t received their product. Here’s the last email I received from Teextile regarding this post…

“I urge (you) not to write a bad article regarding this. We (have) had many problems with our shop with flooding and (losing) loosing (thousands) thoundsand of dollars in merchandise. We are trying to rebuild our name and get out of all the problems that we (have) had in the past. We will prove our selves and as a tshirt community(.) (I) i would hope for your support.” It would help if they could write in English for a start!

Will one of many anonymous workers at Teextile had included a comment at one of our posts regarding their plan to rectify this total disaster of a t-shirt community. The fact is I have removed it, I don’t like being taken advantage of, I have spent weeks reading emails from their angry customers and enough is enough. I took the guy on his word, he lied. So insted I welcome all to comment at this post with their complaints, perhaps if enough do at least some sort of action maybe taken against them regarding the recovery of monies owed. If not, at least it’s a chance for people to get it off their chests. Chests that should be wearing Teextile’s t-shirts right now…

Here’s one of the first emails I received regarding Teextile’s dubious business practices from one of their disgruntled customers -

“Do you like to get gifts for Christmas? Well, I like to Give gifts. I ordered one of the t-shirts on Nov. 8 for my son for Christmas. It is now two days before Christmas and NO t-shirt. I’ve emailed and emailed but no answer to my request of “Where is my t-shirt?”…..So my card was charged November 10 and an email confirmation was sent to my email that they got my order. BUT still no t-shirt. So I finally found their phone # and called them. The man who answered said that the t-shirt company was his brothers and this was his phone #. What kind of company puts his relatives phone # on his business? What customer service, he took my name and # and said he would tell his brother I called?”.

Here’s a few comments that express just how angry people are getting now:

“The Textile folks are absolute snakes. DO NOT BUY from them. There are *plenty* of other great shirt companies out there, don’t waste your time with this “business.” Don’t take my word for it, check out the San Diego Better Business Bureau website (of which teextile is not a member, of course) and see how many complaints have been logged against them.”

“Thanks to Buy-Tees. Perhaps they’ll respond to you? One can only hope. At the end of the day $7 is not the end of the world- I just want to know that others know they’re throwing it down the drain.”

Here’s a comment on Teextile’s own homepage right now:

“So Franco, another week has passed and you STILL refuse to communicate on the refund my order, which was placed in SEPTEMBER. You have all the information you need to do a Western Union money transfer, which you can do online in very few minutes. Yet you refuse to provide basic customer service to someone who has bought several shirts from you previously. This is UNACCEPTABLE for an online store to conduct business this way. Send my my refund. To the design on this page, I encourage you to not allow the owner of this site steal more money from people through your art, please consider taking your designs down. A business is not judged by if they get some things right, it’s how they act when something goes wrong.”

It’s sad to admit it but Teextile have despite their protests stolen money from many of their customers. If there’s a will there’s a way, I think the best option right now as suggested by a few of the above is to contact the Better Business Bureau. The problem is that unless hundreds come forward I doubt much action can be taken. However at least we can assure that Teextile doesn’t continue to fleece pockets of unsuspecting customers by spreading the word. To help those who have been ripped off by Teextile please consider mentioning this post at Twitter, Facebook, Digg, Stumbleupon, your own blogs, anywhere that might further the message. There’s a list of social networking buttons beneath this post if you care to help the many Teextile have let down. The more that know about Teextile’s behaviour the less likely they will be able to continue to operate.

Seventh.Ink’s 2010 Spring Line of Fury T-shirts is available now to pre-order for just $20 each. Check out these two beauties…

Greedy Shark Tee

If there’s one thing worse than a hungry shark it’s a greedy one. Love the ragged style of the illustration, with some very subtle details including mottled tones and water splashes.

Greedy Shark Girls: http://www.furyshirts.com/design/greedy-shark-girls

Luv Me For Me Tee

A very cute tee, only for the girls, a great sense of patchwork about this design without the excessive cuteness that goes along with this type of shirt.

SQY-T : A Chinese Invasion

SQY-TSQY-T are an amazing Chinese t-shirt brand who’ve been around a few years now but haven’t quite hit the big time yet, I’ll make a suggestion at the end of this post that might explain why!

Right now I, you and anyone else who can’t speak Chinese has only one option when it comes to buying their absolutely amazing all-over print tees, and that’s their online store at www.sqy-t.com. Sure the prices are a little on the steep side, and yes no doubt the postage costs will be a pain, but if you really want to leap ahead of the crowd in the t-shirt fashion stakes then you have to check this label out.

I knwo little nothing about them bar the fact they have some of the best t-shirt designs out there at the moment. However I do know their sole stockist at present is based in China and runs an online store written in Chinese. Luckily SQY-T have their own online store in English and even more luckily they’ve costed their products in USA dollars as well as Chinese RMB. So you won’t need to live there to get ahead of the curve. There are quite a few collections on offer including Invisible Cities which is my personal favourite (even if there is only one tee in that collection so far), Doodles and Tribute to Chinese Heritage. Do check them all out though!

What’s really comforting about this label is that it’s yet another sign that art and creativity are ever so gently subverting the grip of communism on the country, not that I’m particularly pro-capitalist, I just know the more Chinese people who are allowed to express themselves the sooner  the Chinese government will have to loosen their vice-like grip over their people. Saying that I’ve heard the news today that Google finally made a stand against the Chinese government and their response is most likely yet more censorship, i.e banning Google from China. Sometimes it looks more like China takes one step forward and two steps back as far as the second cultural revolution is concerned. Still, art, including t-shirts, should help pave the way. even if it is only in some small way.

Don’t expect anything too controversial from SQY-T, their work is stunning, beautiful even, but right now, unlike many t-shirt designers across the globe, they aren’t free (as yet) to express all their thoughts and feelings through their art, but nevertheless it’s personally an exciting development to see Chinese urban fashion stepping up to the line to be counted. Check out these amazing tees…

Utopian Home T-Shirt

Utopia Home Tee (Back)
Utopian Home T-Shirt

I love this tee, the Utopia Home t-shirt is described as a tribute to writer and journalist Italo Calvino, can’t quite see it myself, it is however a fantastic example of isometric pixel art. An absolutely obsessive amount of detail went into this design. I think it might just be the most creative tee I have featured so far. I really can’t get over the time it must have taken to design this piece. I’m sure it was designed as a vector but still all that detail, I can’t believe it. Absolutely stunning! Get what might be the best t-shirt on the market right now for $42 plus postage for men and women in all sizes.

Audience T-Shirt

Audience Tee
Audience Tshirt (Back)

So many people, so little time. I’ve heard natural optimists exclaim how life is a rush, I doubt they meant this kind exactly. An amazing all-over printed tee featuring a massive crowd at what is most likely a sports event, although in all honesty it could be anywhere. I’d have liked to have seen a t-shirt like this with a mass panic at the stock market. But who knows, that idea might be censored by the Chinese government for ruining confidence in the RMB. Still a cool tee all the same. Get this one for $42 for men and women in all sizes and a total of 6 styles.

Got Stuck T-Shirt

Got Stuck Tee
Got Stuck Tee (Back)

Hate traffic? Don’t we all? Celebrate the misery of modern life with this instant classic. The Got Stuck t-shirt uses all-over printing techniques to the fullest, and considering the inflated prices a lot of Western companies charge for all-over printed tees $42 doesn’t sound so bad. Although the shipping will sting you. For instance it costs a whacking great $24.11 shipping to the UK and USA. So, you’ll need to bear that in mind when buying any of their products. Still, would make a great b’day present hint hint :p Get the Got Stuck t-shirt for men (2 styles) S to XL and women (4 styles) S to L.

Check out the rest of SQY-T’s fabulous t-shirt collections at www.sqy-t.com.

Why doesn’t your nearest store stock SQY-T? Well, if I had the cash and the initiative I’d try to wangle a license for their designs, sell them across the USA, Europe, and even globally, then split the profits with them. I’m sure some enterprising t-shirt mogul out there is thinking exactly the same thing. We will have to wait and see if they do!

Built by Wendy. Loved by all.

Take a look at this star studded roll-call of famous clients of the NY based fashion designer Wendy Mullin of Built by Wendy fame:-

Sofia Coppola, Zooey Deschanel, Jack Black, Parker Posey, Andy Samberg, Kirsten Dunst, Michelle Williams, Jonah Hill, Paul Rudd, Amy Poehler, Kristen Wiig, Amber Tamblyn, Rashida Jones, James Franco, Zoe Cassavetes, Claire Danes, Jason Schwartzmann.

Yes this girl is popular and then some, and no wonder why! Her flair for designing all kinds of clothing and her undoubtedly fine talent for illustration has resulted in a cult fashion label that’s influence has spread far and wide around the world. Asides a vast range of original pieces like her beaded Native American belts, cabled fisherman sweaters, canvas tote-bag inspired dresses and much more, there are links to a wide range of men’s and women’s t-shirts that evoke a longing for the past, a great taste in old movies, and a hankering for a simpler more traditional view on the world.

If you love classic movies such as To Kill a Mockingbird, Ordinary People and Mean Streets, and would love to see their iconic imagery and mood deftly illustrated and supplanted to high quality t-shirts, then www.builtbywendy.com should be your first port of call. BBW (an unfortunate abbreviation perhaps) offer a glimpse into the past, into simpler times when fashion was more friendly, when the majority of fashion lovers would buy their clothes locally, or even create them themselves from professional patterns.

By no coincidence Mullin sells her designs as patterns at her store, reigniting the past practices of millions of home seamstresses across the world. Even I remember my mother and my sister for a while busying themselves at a pair of sewing machines, busily beefing up their wardrobes with all the latest styles of the time, created from materials of their own choice, they really did become rather good at it. Of course there was the occasional mistake, and after a moment of parodied parading they’d unpick the offending item and begin a new blouse, dress, pair of slacks or when they were feeling more daring perhaps a coat or jacket. If you’re not too confident at the sewing machine then you might want to try her SEW U series of books, which include plenty of patterns and tips to get you started.

Take a look at these fine examples of her work…

Mean Streets T-Shirt

Mean Streets T-Shirt
Mean Streets T-shirt (Detail)

Beautifully drawn and with a great sense of humour, love the moody style and sentiment. Wendy’s flagship store is based in Little Italy so she should know just how bad Little Italy’s Feast of San Gennaro really is. A quote from Wikipedia explains the situation… ‘Some residents of Little Italy dislike the noise, garbage, and crowds generated by the festival. Although it is portrayed as a neighbourhood event, most of the organizers, vendors, or attendees do not live in the area. For more than a decade, moreover, federal prosecutors have raised concerns that organized crime is involved in running the festival‘. Available for men and women. The featured tee is for the ladies and comes in sizes S to L and S to XL for men. Each are available for a rather high price at $45 however there are design differences in the embroidered details. The women’s feature an embroidered Italian flag and the men’s has an embroidered line in the colours of the flag at the bottom of the design.

Exploding Mouse T-Shirt

Exploding Mouse T-Shirt

I love this design, I am with Bart Simpson when he states that Mickey is the mascot of an evil corporation, but this design clearly harks back to the very beginnings of the Disney empire. At a time when a rather badly drawn mouse did little more than jump about, squeak and occasionally laugh at very little. If only this particular rodent had met with a fateful accident we might not need to endure the likes of Euro Disney and awful awful remakes of classic literature aka Tim Burton’s pathetic reinterpretation of the classic novel Alice in Wonderland (even the cheap cartoon version fairs better). Still don’t get me started on Disney, back to the t-shirt, a classic in the making. Confusingly enough Wendy has decided to supply the same product photo modelled by a slightly ginger geek for both the men‘s and women‘s versions of this tee, so don’t worry if you think you’ve arrived at the wrong page, you haven’t. Again this one is pricey, I suppose you could argue that you get what you pay for, and when you want a quality t-shirt by a top NYC fashion designer $45 doesn’t sound so exuberant. Available in ‘athletic grey’ in sizes XS to XL for both sexes.

Dudes Gone Wild T-Shirt

Dudes Gone Wild Tee

Dudes Gone Wild Tee (Detail)

Another fantastically well drawn design, love the play on words, subverting the whole College Break / Girls Gone Wild idiom, ever so subtly to the point that even mentioning it seems somewhat obtrusive, the Dudes Gone Wild tee features Warren Oats from Hired Hand & Cockfighter; Stacy Keach from Fat City; Harry Dean Stanton from Cockfighter & Cisco Pike; and Kris Kristofferson from Cisco Pike & Pat Garrett. Only large sizes left for women and sizes S to XL for the guys at $45 each.

Bloody Boys T-Shirt

Bloody Boys Tee
Bloody Boys Tee (Detail)

Following on the rough and tumble theme The Bloody Boys Tee comes in heather blue and features Noah Taylor from “Flirting”, Malcolm McDowell from “If”, Bud Cort from “Harold & Maude”, Adam Baldwin from “My Bodyguard”. I love Lindsay Anderson‘s “If…“, and anything that promotes this superb film and director is alright by me! (If you love If then check out O Lucky Man!) Once again superb illustrations make up this unique design, available in heather blue in all sizes for both men and women.

Wendy’s t-shirts are like a breath of fresh air to the market, simple high quality tees printed with a beautiful selection of traditional illustrations featuring a blend of nostalgic and obscure imagery, reinterpreted for the 21st century with a gentle sense of humour and a highly delicate touch.

1998 saw the opening of Wendy’s first flagship retail store on Centre Market Place in the Little Italy neighbourhood in NYC. Her successful online shop launched soon after that, and in 2005 she opened her second retail store in the Williamsburg neighbourhood of Brooklyn. Her line is carried in boutiques and indie stores throughout the USA and around the world. Wendy has further built up the brand by venturing into publishing and numerous high profile collaborations. In 2003, Wendy was hired as Creative Director of Wrangler47, a limited premium denim line for Wrangler Jeans. The collaboration was highly successful and the line completely sold out across the USA.

There’s only one real criticism of Wendy’s store, either she should get some new models in (especially for the women’s tees, using a man is just confusing), or failing that get a better looking BF. Only joking lol.

See more of her work at www.builtbywendy.com.

Stop The Press – Headline Shirts

Headline ShirtsIt’s been a while since Buy Tees has featured a funny t-shirt brand, so to pick up the mood and welcome in the Spring let’s have a few laughs at what’s on offer at Headline Shirts in San Francisco. Don’t expect intellectual debate or beautiful art, Headline Shirts create funny t-shirts inspired by the news. Be it pop culture, politics, music and of course history. They always have discounts on offer such as their $10 deals. Also look out for their extra special deals such as St. Stereotypes Day when every green t-shirt is just $10. Their postage costs are $5 for USA and Canada, $10 for international customers.

Personally I prefer the more cynical sarcastic tees on offer, everything from the US prison system, football violence, evil dictators, geekdom and the environment are tackled by Headline’s top team of highly facetious chimps. (Okay not really but the logo says otherwise). You can get all the latest from HS via Facebook, Twitter and RSS as well as their mailing list.

Proceeds T-Shirt

Proceeds T-Shirt

Sarky, snarky, funny. It’s true, so many celebs and politicians on the bandwagon, the thing is most of them ask the public for the money, funny how few shell out a decent amount themselves. I suppose that’s because their “time is so precious”. Get the Proceeds T-Shirt for men in S to 3X in red for $19.99.

Censored Document T-Shirt

Censored Document T-Shirt

There’s nothing like an open government, and this is nothing like open government. If you want to know the truth about what’s going on in the Middle East, rely on Headline Shirts to put you straight. It seems that everything is actually fine, no one has died and… “The troops are having a blast here”. Great concept, love the message, get the Censored Document T-shirt for men and women in various sizes in white for $19.

You May Already Be A Loser T-Shirt

You May Already Be A Loser T-Shirt
You May Already Be A Loser T-Shirt

This one made me laugh, You May Already Be A Loser T-Shirt tackles one of my pet hates. My late father used to waste a small fortune on scratch cards. It’s like they are the most paltry form of entertainment in the world. At least if he was hooked on the geegees he get to see a race. Paying for the pleasure of scratching silver gunk off and eternal disappointment doesn’t appeal to me. Get this cool shirt for just $9 in Headline’s sale, available M for men (black) and just one Small red tee left for the women!

Cro-Magnum T-Shirt

Cro Magnum T-Shirt

Loving this one, imagine if you mixed up Planet of the Apes and the Dirty Harry movies? This is probably what you’d end up with. I really like the clean vector style in the Cro-Magnum T-Shirt too, available in all sizes for men in white for $19.

Go on, have a laugh, check out Headline Shirts.

Adeline – Tees by Green Day

Adeline Street is the punk inspired clothing collection produced by Billie Joe Armstrong of Green Day and his wife Adrienne. Adeline Street began as a spin off from a record label offering up a fine selection of promo t-shirts but they sold so many that now the clothing line has taken off whilst the record label went under. Billie describes their t-shirt range as “basic rock and roll streetwear”, taking influence from the early punk stylings of classic punk rockers like The Clash to more avant-garde bands of the time such as Devo. Before you get too excited Billie and his wife haven’t physically designed these tees, they say their input is more of a “fashion philosophy” but what the heck, they’re all still very cool whoever they found to create them. Billie and his wife went through the draft designs telling the designers what sucked and what rocked and voila Adeline Street’s t-shirt collection was born.

In this interview Billie is rather vague when it comes to their ethical policy, I heard the mention of sustainable clothing but that was quickly followed by the phrase “baby steps” which essentially means their dragging their feet. I mean if you were a worldwide famous rock star I’m sure you’d pull your thumb out, still as he says, it’s on the cards :/

He also vaguely mentions indie retailers selling their wares which was again a little wishy washy on the detail, still luckily I’ve managed to track down their tees on sale at GrindStore.com. Massive reductions if you’re after any!

Gateway T-Shirt by Rob Dobi

It’s been a good few years since we featured Rob Dobi‘s work, perhaps one of the greatest artists in the t-shirt industry right now, he’s gone from strength to strength in style and ability, and his choice of subject matter has leant more and more towards the surreal. For those not familiar with his work read ‘Full Bleed Ahead‘ for the full low-down. If you want to see what’s he’s been up to then check out his site at FullBleed.org, however I have to feature one of his most recent creations which has just won it’s rightful place amongst the hallowed halls of Design By Humans. It’s called the Gateway T-Shirt, and speaking personally it’s absolutely beautiful!

Gateway T Shirt by Rob Dobi at Design by Humans

Gateway Tee For Women By Rob Dobi

An absolutely incredible design oozing sci-fi and fantasy all over the place. I love the extremely delicate use of halftones in this piece, deceptively simple and filled to the brim with a sense of wonder. I think this must be Dobi’s best work yet. It’s available for both men and women for $19 however they’ve sold out of small size tees for women :/  Still you can get yours at http://www.designbyhumans.com/shop/detail/6190.

Whilst I’m at it here are three classic designs redesigned or as he describes it ‘reset’ available at Rob Dobi’s own store FullBleed.org.
