Speaks For Itself
Itself are a t-shirt community that deals with quality rather than quantity, they only offer limited edition shirts, alongside a range of tunics and long sleeve tees, and they don’t officially have too many designers on their books – although there are plenty who’d love to be! I’d say this was a step forward, however much you might want the public to provide quality control, there will be those, shall we say ‘less-than-average’ designers with an army of online buddies to help them make headway in the popularity stakes, even if it means that the more usual vote-based t-shirt communities end up stuck with a pile of unsold tees for the next sale. To counteract the ‘art Jock’ mentality, Itself don’t even mention the prospect of voting on their homepage. it’s a savvy angle marketing-wise, I’d always push the idea of exclusivity and quality over fashion democracy every time. Still once you take a peek inside the store you realise the mechanics of the brand is definitely geared to scouting out new high-calibre talent with 590 designs in the running, from a legion of potential contributors competing for a whopping $4000 prize and of course instant fame
Now, I have to admit the earlier half of the collection isn’t anything to write home about, but every label has to start somewhere, they need to be established to some degree to attract the calibre of design they require for a discerning audience, and so I’m sure we can both forgive them a quick evolution from the generic in order to provide a platform for their top picks in t-shirt design. Which fortunately is exactly how it’s worked out for Itself. There are at least half a dozen cracking designs on offer now, by names you might not recognise, but I assure you once you see their work, you will remember them.
If you want to get involved you can submit your own designs here, sign up and vote keep up with their latest offerings at Facebook and follow them at Twitter, but even if you’re adverse to social networking at least sign up as a member and get the first word on any new tees and offers in the making. What’s more send in a photo of you wearing one of their tees and get a dollar back! Time for this brand to speak for itself in the medium of great t-shirt design… read more
Red Hot Poker Tees
If you’re a poker player with a hankering for a collection of t-shirts that do justice to the game then try the brand new sports label at Showdown Poker Gear which offers some very hot graphic tees to satisfy even the top players. I’m not exactly what you’d call a poker player, to tell the truth the closest I’ve come to betting at cards was Blackjack with matchsticks with the family as a kid, but even I can see how much www.ShowdownPokerGear.com offer a full house of high roller shirts that would suit every player from novice to pro.
Big poker fans Joel and his brother Erik Jensen have taken two years to develop the concept, designs and store and they’ve done it to perfection. Poker tees, sports tees in general, have a rather bad reputation in the industry, in general little imagination is employed when it comes to sports merchandise, sure there are plenty of popular brands but sportswear doesn’t exactly excel in the graphic department. Something tells me that their style gurus are stuck in the 90s, dreaming of a corporate logo heaven where all consumers comply. However, in this case, that rather sweeping statement most certainly doesn’t apply.
SPG’s tees are made by poker players for poker players, they are all extremely high quality shirts, printed to perfection, and designed to literally stun the competition into submission. We all know about the ’stare’. the ‘poker face’, if your opponents can read your expression, or the fear in your eyes, or the eagerness in your grin, you won’t be cashing in any chips any time soon. However Showdown Poker Gear’s shirts are so stunning you’ll no doubt be able to cheat the other players will be that distracted. OK, maybe not, but wait until you see the intricacy of their work, it’s simply stunning.
Time to take a look at a right royal flush of slick poker shirts you can wear anywhere… read more
Rise And Resist The Winter Months
I have a miserable cold right now, we’ve taken in a stray cat from the snow who’s causing umpteen problems and the heating keeps going on the blink. So I was relieved to learn that not everything wintry is bad, for instance Rise and Resist have just brought out their latest seasonal collection and a dead classy collection it is too. They seem to have employed the help of a medieval monk this time around, a lot of the designs remind me of ancient illuminated texts and Gothic splendour is abound.
I have to admit it was rather a surprise to see this key change, still originality and freshness is the lifeblood of any successful brand, so there’s no room for nostalgia (unless you want to check out their sale which still has a few of their old favourites) and move on and upwards to something, darker, moodier and slightly more disturbing, much like the British weather at the moment.
New Glenn On The Block – Aled Lewis
You’re probably all aware of Glennz tees, run by Glenn Jones, a highly talented and humorous Australian illustrator who has for the main part cornered his area of the market with a wide variety of pithy pun-based t-shirts illustrating much of the ridiculous in society and the media. However you might not have heard of Aled Lewis, who for all intensive purposes is as about as close to an apprentice if not challenger for the place as king of comic tees.
Their styles are interchangeable, both Aled Lewis and Glennz being masters of graphic design, sticking to the old adage that ‘less is more’ both manage to convey t-shirt designs packed with humour and artistic reference without cluttering their work with excessive details and effects. Pure as purest vectors can be. The only real difference I can spot is that Alex has a decidedly more British sense of humour, featuring such British icons as The Tardis from Doctor Who, medieval humour and old school punk rock in the form of a male chicken.
Aled doesn’t have his own store as such however you’ll be relieved to know that all his works are available as winning designs (sometimes in collaboration with others) at Threadless and Shirt.Woot. Let’s take a look at some of Aled’s funniest creations and see exactly why this guy may become the new t-shirt king of comedy!

A Manga Fashion Maestro – Camilla d’Errico
Camilla D’errico is a highly respected Canadian artist, an illustrator, a comic book visionary, painter, fashion designer, hey she’s even got her own Wikipedia page – she’s produced a graphic novel for Avril Lavigne, and perhaps her most famous creation (so far), her self-published comic art odyssey Tanpopo, which is based loosely upon the story of Faust, and I believe there is even a video game in the pipeline! Camilla d’Errico is what I’d call a true Renaissance Woman, with so many talented fingers in numerous creative pies, I think it’s about time that her t-shirt collection got a little more attention, seeing as everything else she’s produced has had worldwide attention, it makes sense to complete the set!
In all honesty there aren’t too many tees on offer right now, alongside a few sweatshirts there are plenty of other products available including comics, posters, cards and even handbags, but the few shirts that are on offer are well worth checking out. They feature some of her most iconic characters, and perhaps the most famous being her ‘helmet girls’ which are for all intensive purposes an elaboration on a Steam Punk theme, each sporting gargantuan headgear that would bring pangs of jealousy to the most outrageous fashion junkie. Who knows, perhaps Camilla will even produce a range of the craziest hats seen in since the Vikings. Still her particular flair for evocative Pop Surrealism are more than apparent in her current collection of shirts and sweats.
Her knack for illustration goes beyond the expectation of most mere mortals, uniquely blend elements of lithe and languid women reminiscent of the Pre-Raphaelites, if of course we were living in an alternate universe where this prestigious art movement had spawn from the mountains and shores of Japan, and a highly intricate Manga style which shines with the same effervescence from other masters (and mistresses) of the genre, particularly Jamie Hewlett’s, made famous by the band Gorillaz. In fact if Gorillaz had had an all-female line up you can bet your bottom dollar I’d be writing a very different review right now!
Expect a cornucopia of expression, tight detail, and quirky sense of fun and beauty that just doesn’t let up. So let’s take a look at what might be the finest collection of female tees we’ve featured at Buy Tees so far and meet the devastating hand/eye co-ordination of Camilla d’Errico!

Back To Basics – Print Liberation
Print Liberation break all the rules when it comes to t-shirt design, yet their range of tees deliver such a powerful punch, offering a deceptively basic typographic home-made style, which personally forces the likes of people like me to reassess exactly what makes a great tee. The truth is their simple and straightforward designs offer an alternative to the slick graphics and ideas of most of the indie market. Sure, putting it bluntly, they’re as basic as can be, which in most circumstances is a risky position to take in fashion, yet their philosophy works. In fact it shines.
When you buy a t-shirt from Print Liberation you’re buying a message, you’re opting in to an ethos that hasn’t reared it’s head in decades. Big bold upper case fonts declare their ideology like a heavyweight knock out blow to the head. Don’t expect ‘pretty’ or exuberant illustration – that just isn’t what Print Liberation are about. Don’t expect glib and throwaway sentiments either, this brand doesn’t mince their words, this brand is about as close to an ‘anti-label’ as anyone has managed to create in decades. Their home grown basic design ethic is born out of experience and need, not ambition or fashionable attitude. You get what you see, and what you see is the truth.
They offer a range betwixt the big bold and rather glib typography tees that flooded Britain in the 80’s and the highly politicised tees of the 60’s and 70’s psychedelic era. Avoiding the petty thoughts of famous bands of the time like Wham’s “Choose Life” and Frankie Goes To Hollywood’s “Frankie Says“, and taking on a deeper and more politicised line more suited to the revolutionary downturn of the hippie movement. Yet there’s nothing sentimental or amateur about Print Liberation’s presentation, with a total lack of pretension, their designs get to the point straight away. There’s no room for art when it comes to this label’s idea of fashion, their hard-edged design ethic tells you why and how it is the way it is. They never cushion the blow, they never ‘decorate’ the truth with illustration and a spectrum of colour. They think the way many of us think, and in turn, their customers help to spread their message.
Founded in 1999, a moment when much of the media touted the world as we knew it would end, well if the Millennium Bug had had its way, a bedraggled collective of burnt-out advertising executives decided to turn the tables on big government and big business. Using the same talents prostituted to the corporations in the name of profit, they began to brainstorm their way through to a new beginning, an new era of indie urban fashion and art. The message would always be the truth, the mechanism for delivery would be popular culture, and the ideology revolution. You’re either with them or against them, that’s just how they roll, live with it. read more
Feed The Brain – Print The Mind
The Printed Mind have slipped by me so far, I do know that Levi Hardeman, part of Texas-based Word! Apparel in a previous incarnation started his new venture this year, but asides that I have little more to go on than the rest of you good tee-obsessed folks out there. What I can say is they offer up a wide range of smart slick designs, printed in generous proportions, and every t-shirt is guaranteed to have some association, however vague, with the mind or brain, depending how you hang philosophically.
Asides their fascination with the cerebellum they have nurtured ties with a family of hardcore metal bands including A Tragic History and My Children My Bride, have deep debates on the best Mexican restaurants and a slight leaning towards the dafter end of the Sci-Fi spectrum. As you’ll soon no doubt discover their passion for exploring the mind won’t lead you into the furthest regions of philosophical debate, or the meaning of being. Let’s just say they’ve come to the same conclusion that many of us do in our relatively short time on the planet. The mind is a strange thing, harboured up in a couple of pounds of grey matter, firing off electrical impulses under a protective bone shell, and came upon the idea that this rather mysterious subject would make a great concept for a t-shirt collection. Which it invariably does.
