Self Destruct – Funky Christian Tees

Right, first off I am not a Christian, I don’t believe in any major religion or even a blend these days, I used to but I worked for a day as a street cleaner with a Jehovah’s Witness when I was 17. He was at last 10 years older, happy as Larry, and continually bugged me about coming to Kingdom Hall. By the end of the day I managed to convince him his beliefs were incorrect and he spent half an hour sitting in the gutter crying his eyes out. I then spent an hour assuring him I had only been joking with him. I suppose that’s when the rot set in.

Self Destruct Clothing sells a range of skateboards, hats, and funky tees, and asides the bible quotes on every product page I’d never have noticed it was a Christian label. For that alone SD have taken a giant leap forward compared to the competition, essentially they don’t preach through their products, or rather they do but in such a subtle way I am sure many who see their t-shirts on friends would never be able to tell. Over half the people in Britain have never read the Bible or visited a church excepting weddings and funerals. In the U.S it’s a different story, America being the only major Western country to have a majority of believers. I am more of the Bill Maher Religulous church, as in ‘I Believe I don’t Know’, which is as true as any religious belief can ever be.

What stands out most about SD is their art work, slightly graffiti, slightly comic style, strong and bold lines and composition, here’s a selection of their strongest designs.

Inside Out Tee

I really rather like this one, I think it’s the first time I’ve seen this particular combination of biology and war in a t-shirt design, it’s really inventive. Especially the way that they’ve utilised an A-bomb mushroom cloud as a lower inestinal tract. Here’s the Bible quote from the product page ‚Äú…if by the spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live…” (Romans 8:13). Essentially I’m guessing that means be a good person, or suffer. Although there are a lot of wrongs in the world committed in the name of God, I will let this one pass. Still a very strong design, I’d like to see more cloud rising up the ribcage but you can’t have everything. You can snap up this tee for $27.99 in sizes S to XL and both grass and black. Seen Unseen Tee

I really like the drawing style here, it lies somewhere between Dr. Seuss and the original 1970’s Scooby Doo cartoons. The purple shirt really complements the colours of the print, I’m a little at a loss as to the meaning of this, the reasoning behind the image is not as self-explanatory as I suspect SD hoped for. The Bible quote reads ‚ÄúFor what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal” (2 Corinthians 4:18). I suppose this might refer to the instant culture we live in, how we are overloaded with information for the immediate present when in hindsight a vast majority of what we have learned from the mass media is rather inconsequential. The Wedding – Renewed Mind Tee

Now before you go jumping the gun, this t-shirt isn’t about the sacrosanct ritual of the marriage ceremony, actually it’s a little bit rock and roll, created for one of the SD team’s favourite bands The Wedding. I’d provide a link but I am sure you can guess the trouble I’m having searching Google for a band called The Wedding, you guessed it a million wedding bands. Still, it looks like, judging by this design that they’re pretty full on in the rock department. The message is the renewal of the mind, or rather how much the excesses of life can wear you down. Take a moment, breathe, relax, move on. There you go. The Wedding – Renewed Mind tee is in sizes S to XL (Men) in purple at $24.99.

Timebomb Tee

I recently reviewed another timebomb tee, I really do like t-shirts with bombs on, don’t ask me why, and don’t worry I’m not about to blow anyone up in the name of anyone, anything, anywhere. I just appreciate the flux, the contradiction of wearing an image of something dangerous rather than vice versa i.e a dangerous image. It’s not controversial because it’s not real, it’s just an illusion, no hazardous effects included. This tee is particularly drawing attention to the idea that time is running out for us all, we all die, we all are judged by a Christian God according to Christians, or sit in a room with people forever according to Satre, there are plenty more options, and for the less nihilistic some of them are apparently quite nice. Mortality – a bummer – **** happens. Get this tee for men and women in white for $24.99.

If you’re looking for a funkier than usual Christian t-shirt label – I’d say Self Destruct Clothing is your best bet.
