Dissecting Dnæ Genes
To be honest the first time I’d heard of Dn√¶ Genes was yesterday, I’d received an email from Socialite Style discussing future opportunities for my art in the fashion world. I answered enthusiastically, and spent a while checking out their fashion events site before stumbling across Dn√¶ Genes. They’re a rather cryptic brand as it goes, their site didn’t give me much background information to go on, but from what I can gather they’re UK based, hedonistic in their outlook and a favourite with London’s socialite set. Their FAQ page begins with a concise and emotive modus operandi and is quickly followed by a wealth of visual ephemera of kitsch and kooky film and personal nostalgia.
The site is simple yet leaning on the good side of ‘slick’, the layout is easy to navigate, the products are for the most part impressive, very impressive at times, but without some kind of history and specific agenda I found it difficult to truly connect with the brand overall. However that aspect of the label can be easily remedied, what Dn√¶ Genes needn’t worry about is their creative direction, they have some truly hot tees on offer, again simple yet slick, and I am sure are a big hit with the wackier side of the trustafarian set around North and West London. Although it has to be said their prices are incredibly reasonable, especially at the moment seeing as they have a big sale on with all tees going for just £15 each. Still, money isn’t everything, you can’t buy class and Dn√¶ Genes have it by the silver spoonful. Let’s take a peek at how the other half live ;)
Rude Boi Tee
![]() |
Now before you get too excited, Rude Boi along with many of Dnae’s are sold out right now, but if you’re quick and you’re of a medium build you might just be in luck. This is a powerful tee, as far as the imagery right, but the references seem a little too shady for me. As far as I know the only Rude Boys around when I was growing up were part of the original Ska/2 Tone movement and none of them had a haircut like this guy. In fact if recall you were more likely to spot The High-Top Fade amongst highrollers in the mid-eighties and early nineties hip hop scene. One famous example has to be the mop Will Smith sported throughout much of the awful The Fresh Prince of Bel Air TV series – oh how we laughed – NOT. Still there’s a clue in the spelling, and according to the Urban Dictionary it’s basically a texted version of Rude Boy with the added prerequisite that you had to have spent some time in the slammer to be referred to as a Rudeboi. Yes I’m getting old, just can’t keep up with street slang. Still I’m intrigued to know more about the Rude Boi Philosophy as mentioned on this tee. Who knows, it probably involves bling, hood rats, pimps, and AK47s for a start. Great fun, strong image, cool tee. £15 available in medium only!
Interplanetary Tee
![]() |
I love this, the Interplanetary tee. It rocks. Tell you why. Asides a lot of bad sci-fi on TV in the late seventies, following the massive success of the first Starwars triology of movies, and the graphic excellence of Tron, series after series tried their damndest to make sure their opening and closing titles were ‘out of this world’. They weren’t. Nevertheless I, and what seems to be a lot of other people out there, still have a soft spot for the most kitsch space tosh in history including Buck Rogers in the 25th Century and the original Battlestar Galactica. Like I say, asides all that, there’s one influence I’d bet my bottom dollar on for this t-shirt, and that’s one of the all-time best early eighties arcade games ever made – Tempest. This reminds me so much of that game it hurts. If I ever had the money (and space and time) to squander I’d track down an old unit, get it fixed up and blast meaningless vortices to my heart’s content. Then again that’s nostalgia for you, in reality either I or the game would most likely suck. Who knows. Still I and every other eighties afficianado can grab hold of this fine piece of sci-fi excellence in the form of a t-shirt for just £15 in sizes small to X-large. There’s also a sweatshirt if you want to complete the set for just £25.
What Divides Us Unites Us Tee
![]() |
It’s not clever but it’s cute, and pretty much one of the worthiest messages I’ve seen on a tee. A great sentiment for all to live by, if at all possible. A relationship needs work, race, regional and political relationships obviously need a damn sight more, still if even one of these tees goes some way to stopping someone out there being a jerk for a brief second, job well done I say. Loving the style, a teensy weensy bit Sesame Street, that is way back when it was filled with hippies and the graphics seemed designed to trip you out. I loved the pinball numbers the most and what a funky tune! The What Divides Us Unites Us tee is available in blue and white for £15 (sizes M/L/XL).

Their design and concepts have a very 3D thing about it but what stands out more and gives a dynamic images are the glasses which they are wearing…they look cool
