Movie Tees For The Movie Buff
Arcane Projects offer a wide range of movie t-shirts, we’ve reviewed quite a few similar stores now however I have to admit that there are two things that stand out about this label over the competition. Firstly their choice in film is a little bit more esoteric, not obscure as such, but you will really need to know your celluloid with some of their t-shirts. Secondly they offer a unique sideline, something I haven’t seen at their competitors and that is a custom movie t-shirt service. In essence you name your favourite flick and they design a t-shirt that will allude to a detail of the plot, sometimes one that only those who can really call themselves ‘fans’ might recognise.
You will of course find all your old favourites a Arcane, including Terminator (1 & 2), The Shining, Fight Club and Aliens, but there are a few titles on offer that may come as a surprise. The eighties sci-fi classic The Running Man, an adaptation of a Stephen King short story written in 1982 under the pseudonym Richard Bachman, and Point Break, an early role for Keanu Reeves way before he found his place in movie history as Neo in The Matrix. However as I’ve already mentioned there’s nothing stopping you ordering your own custom movie tee, there are so many films out there that deserve this unique treatment, it would be great to see even more obscure movies get the ‘tee treatment’. As it happens I have THX1138 on the screen right now, the first and probably least well known George Lucas movie ever made, now that’s what I mean by obscure! Here are a few of my favourite t-shirts that have had the Arcane Project’s highly original going over, grab some popcorn, a giant cup of watery Coke, and kick back as we go to the movies…
Derelicte T-Shirt

Inspired by the movie Zoolander, this is the Derelicte tee by Arcane, and I have to admit I am a massive fan of this particular gem of the screen. I can never quite make up my mind about Ben Stiller, the guy might just be a genius, he’s made enough money for the industry to heap the kudos on him, he’s made at least three of the most stupid films I’ve ever liked, and that’s quite an achievement, he plays the arrogant self-aggrandising movie star/director a little too well for my liking, but Zoolander has to be one of the best films of its ilk ever conceived. Derelicte is the vision of the fashion designer and guru Mugatu, superbly played by Will Ferrell, and if you haven’t seen the film I’ll try not to spoil it, let’s just say he’s the baddie, although I am sure you’ll guess that the first time he appears on screen. I’d love to see Stiller and Ferrell team up more often, I suppose there just isn’t the room for both their egos on set these days. This is a cool t-shirt, it picks up on one of the strongest themes in the whole film, in fact perhaps the only one, unless you count Stiller’s ‘Blue Magnum’, which in essence is a look for the camera which would be impossible (and undesirable) to capture on tee. Here’s a quote from Mugatu to keep you in the spirit of Zoolander “Let me show you Derelicte. It is a fashion, a way of life inspired by the very homeless, the vagrants, the crack whores that make this wonderful city so unique.” Get the Derelicte tee now for £17.99 in a wide range of colours – sizes small to xxl.
CRS T-Shirt

Based on another classic cult movie, Arcane’s CRS tee takes its inspiration from the classic 1997 psychological thriller The Game which starred Michael Douglas as a bored businessman, given a ‘treat’ by his wayward brother Conrad, for his birthday. This along with Falling Down is the only true reason why I can abide the actor, I find him for the main part a glib and churlish character off-stage but I have to admit I have a great deal of respect for any actor who puts themselves through the paces that Douglas has. In both movies the central protagonist reaches a breaking point, both physically and psychologically reaching a near Zen moment of awareness through his suffering. Again I don’t want to spoil the plot but if you ever did wonder why Douglas was so rich and famous, maybe you remind yourself of exactly how he earned his ‘chops’ in the industry with these two classics. Thinking about it, it would be nice to see a t-shirt referencing Falling Down, perhaps the scene featuring a guy holding a placard ‘Not Economically Viable’ outside the bank would be a good starting point. However The Game’s translation to t-shirt form is far more simple, the organisation that gives Nicholas Van Orto the run around throughout the whole movie prides itself on bringing what they see as an exhilarating yet terrifying edge to the lives of bored rich businessmen across the country. In this case of course the whole thing goes horribly horribly wrong. Get the CRS t-shirt for £17.99 in sizes small to xxl, again in a wide variety of colours.
Cross Roads Mall T-Shirt

Now, I have to admit I’d rather have seen a reference to the original and highly superior 1978 version of Dawn of The Dead, however I can understand Arcane’s thinking here, essentially the more recent remake is most likely more out there in the public consciousness. However if they do decide to go the whole hog it should be the Monroeville Mall. Although all these technical details are by the by, the essential thing is that I and millions of others out there love zombie movies, they’re strangely comforting in a way, perhaps because they do away with the idea of death or the moral complications of gunning down the enemy, or maybe it’d simply the political reference to the state of modern society. We are all zombies in a way, blindly strolling through our lives, being told what to do, what to buy, where to go, then in turn telling others. The viral nature of Zombieism is particularly intriguing, mass communication, news, ideas, fashion, so many aspects of our global culture follow the same structure as disease, information is catching I suppose. Sometimes it helps us learn more, sometimes its simply spin created with the sole intention of throwing us all off the scent. Anyway, enough of the politics, let’s eat some brains. The Cross Roads Mall tee is available in four colours in sizes small to xxl for £17.99.
Cuckoo T-Shirt

I love the movie One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest, the title sounds rather twee if you haven’t seen it, which would surprise me greatly. It’s not high on the radar for a lot of people, but mention the title and most will know the film. A lot of people mark The Shining, Kubrick’s adaptation of Steven King’s horror novel as the best Jack Nicholson movie ever made (well it was the best Steven King adaptation), but in truth I think that OFOTCN is a far more complexed and moving portrayal by Jack. In fact the whole cast in the slice of cinema history were outstanding, most movies that deal with mental health handle the subject of mental health in a gushing or contrite manner (depending on the writer and director). OFOTCN is in a league of its own, focusing on the powerful emotional triad of survival, friendship and rebellion. Without all three elements neither the story nor the characters would have seemed believable. Most modern psychiatry has moved on to some degree, but there is still so little known about the human mind that I am convinced that the medical fraternity of the future will view our understanding and treatment of psychiatric health as barbaric, just as we do the Victorian Asylums of a century ago. Now give me a hand with this water fountain, I need to break a window. Get the Cuckoo t-shirt for £17.99 in sizes small to xxl, again in a variety of colours.
