Tuck Into Pyknic’s Tees
Here’s a rather tasty review for you featuring the fabulous t-shirts of Pyknic Clothing at www.pyknicwear.com – serving a great sense of humour alongside some fantastically well drawn designs, the two guys behind the label Andrew Marshall (aka The Chef) and Stephen Thompson aka (The Butcher) have created a unique branding concept that literally has their fan base eating out of their hands. Their slant on the t-shirt market has gone from strength to strength as they turned their backs on the traditional surf/skate market a few years back and headed off in a weird and wonderful alternate reality where fashion and food collide in a frenzy of colour and creative flair. Even their site is a veritable feast for the eyes, mocked up to closely resemble a retro diner, the graphics are smart, the impact immediate, the navigation a breeze, the prices highly competitive (check out their sale) – this label has their market nailed and are going from strength to strength with a wide range of retailers stocking their goods across the world in the USA, Europe, Australia and well just about anywhere you’d expect to find a cool t-shirt store. In fact even Hot Topic stock a few of their tees, so you know they’ve hit the big time, let’s hope the recession doesn’t begin to cut back on their plans for world domination, somehow I doubt it will make any difference.
Most of their designs, though conceptually conceived by Andrew and Stephen are illustrated by a variety of top artists under their wing, and it’s obvious by the startling diversity of style and composition that they’ve most certainly got an eye for talent. What’s more Pyknic are extremely adept at building a phenomenal brand with a wide variety of social networking hooks to pull in the punters including their blog, a popular Myspace page, Andrew’s Twitter as well as a whole heap of bands who adore their clothing that together make the Pyknic Family. They also offer a mailing list at their store so you can keep up with all the latest news on sales and if you really want to bug them for all they’re worth they openly invite your questions via AIM – their username is PYKNICwear. But before you do maybe you should check out exactly what all the fuss is about, so hand me your plate and I’ll pile it high with the best of the best from the crazily creative camp at Pyknic! read more

Get Your Teeth In To FreeGums
So who, what, why where? Well it all began (for us here) when Rohan from Fabnob.com.au (a fashion writer and devoted fan of Buy Tees) told us about their latest interview with Alvaro Ilizarbe aka Freegums – we were pretty impressed with the interview and not being au fait with FG we decided to investigate further. Alvaro is what you might call a Renaissance Man, no I don’t mean he wears a doublet and stockings and a feather in a velvet cap quoting Shakespeare at any opportune moment, well maybe he does but he obviously keeps that aspect of his life close to his heart, no I mean the guy is multi-talented and happy with almost any creative medium. By the way in case you’re wondering the name ‘Freegums’ was originally the name of Alvaro’s party nights, don’t ask me why, I’ve no idea.
He used to run house parties, he once drove an ice-cream van full of art around South Florida promoting and selling new contemporary art, oh and as you might have guessed he makes great t-shirts. If you want the full low-down on what makes Alvaro check out this great interview at Fabnob otherwise stick around and check out what all the fuss is about! read more

Unleash The Madness At Tolky Monkys
Welcome to the crazy world of Spanish Pop Art label Tolky Monkys. It’s a veritable Euro designer fun house over at http://www.tolkymonkys.com/ but if you ‘no habla englais’ then you should head straight to the English language version of the store at http://www.tolkymonkys.com/en/. However if you’re in Spain, or around the Med you might want to see them in the flesh as it were, you can see their sizeable list of stockists here.
The fact is that for me at the very least I needn’t worry about language barriers, good design concepts will always carry through and this is certainly true of TM, their quirky style, insane graphics and world of strange characters and situations need little explanation. As with many cult trends out there you may find that yours will literally immerse them self in the cornucopia of Tolky-esque fantasies; there are t-shirts for the lads and the girls (as well as hoodies), postcards, posters and even wallets which I’m sure they’ll all be showing off to each other before you know it.
Tolky Monky’s is one of those few labels that I can imagine becoming an animated series one day, their style is so unique and instantly memorable, if you “get it” or don’t it doesn’t really matter, visually the impact is so overwhelming that this range is sure fire bet for a future international “yoof” brand, perhaps if they get the right backing, promotion and sponsorship far more. If you want to see plenty more large images (than I can possibly show here) of their products pop on over to their Flickr stream and gaze in wonder of the madness that is TM. Whilst you’re at it keep up with all the latest Tolky monkys news at their blog.
As for the products, expect the highest quality, printed clearly and crisply each design works its way around both front and back, as well as sides and seams of the garment, extending and extenuating the tale told Although I have to admit I must simply be too old these days because I can’t really fathom what’s going beyond the fabulous design work – ah well c’est la vie. Anyway all their highly original tees are on offer for ‚Ǩ22 each for girls and ‚Ǩ20 for the boys plus a few reduced to just ‚Ǩ15. Available in sizes small to large (not sure how large – perhaps mum and dad can get them too and embarrass the kids), and are now shipping right across Europe and the USA. So if you don’t want to blend in with the crowd on any beach from California to the Costas you know where to go!
Conceptually I will have to take a back seat in this particular review (which is a first for me) and let the gang at Tolkys Monkys do the talking, after all it is ‘their world’ I am featuring here! So, when you’re ready, put your space suit on, grab your favourite magic robes, forget everything you’ve ever learned in the humdrum ordinary age of the 21st Century and fly with me to an alternative parallel dimension where characters like Roger The Lab Rabbit, Eggbeater and Blind Mucus, Olegario The Gregarious Zombie and other bizarre characters from the minds of Tolky Monkys rule the day. If you want to learn more about all the characters at TM click here. read more
The Return of Das Monk
It’s been a while since we’ve featured the Das Monk t-shirt label and seeing as they’ve just released a brand new collection this seems the most opportune moment. As always Das Monk’s founder and designer Marc Hendrick has pulled out all the stops in order to wow his loyal following and the t-shirt buying public at large. Over recent years Das Monk has expanded into an international fashion label, now being stocked in 20 major stores across the USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. Experimentation is always at the forefront of the label’s raison d’√™tre, and in more recent times collaboration has too been the name of the game.
The latest symbiosis of talent and style comes from the infusion of Designer Marc Hendrick’s collaboration with international artists Zach Johnsen (US), Tim Laing (UK), Evan Meister (US), and Keenan Marshall Keller (US) for the unique designs in this latest collection. Hendrick’s unique choices in approach and style for the Das monk label have given rise to a cult following over recent years with cult music industry names like MGMT, TV on the Radio, Lupe Fiasco, A-Trak, Van She and Justice all backing the brand’s indomitable rising power in the field of tees.
Combining new designs with old favourites the latest collection is themed as a ‘Midnight in the Mojave’ depicting a story of bad trips, drifters, and desert dreaming in the void of the desert landscape and urban drop-out mythology. Continuing its post-modern take on 21st century psychedelia, tinged with the down-to-earth pain and hardship of a life on the rocks, infusing the bizarre, the irreverence and foresight of yet another lost generation. Let’s take a look behind the monastery walls and see what’s hanging on the line this season:-
The Amazing Ames Bros.
No they’re not a flying trapeze act, they’re not part of a secret government cloning project, and they’re not a household cleaning product manufacturer but they do make great tees. The sort you can wear anywhere with pride, the sort that will confuse your mother, make a customs officer at the airport snigger, and get you through any interview (as long as the work is paid at minimum wages). If you want quality gear, if you have a superb sense of humour and nothing seems to phase you, then it’s time to try on some styles by the Ames Brothers. AmesBros.com has a deceptively cool and simple layout, I love the little tricks they’ve sneaked in on their site to keep you hooked, check out the main character, which appears to be a kid from a 1950′s comic reinvented on a faux-graffiti background, it’s true what they say about great paintings – the eyes follow you around everywhere – lol.
The Ames Bros. (Jeff and Barry Ament) have recently teamed up with Pearl Jam artist Brad Klausen, responsible for the creation of just about every Pearl Jam poster there ever was and published a rather fab book worth checking out. Pearl Jam Vs. Ames Brothers should be getting a heap load more publicity soon seeing as the big wigs in La La Land are currently shooting a Pearl Jam movie. Let’s hope it doesn’t turn out like a po-faced version of Spinal Tap! I have never enjoyed many rockumentaries, but then again most rock stars have made it because they can jam to high heaven, not so much for their intellectual clout. Still, it’s all poetry I suppose. Anyway be sure to check out the new book featuring 100s of poster designs here.
If you have the spare dough you might be lucky enough to get the brothers to design or illustrate something for you, I’m guessing their rates are going to reflect public demand so if you want to hire them be prepared to pay big time – anyway commission them for your project here. If you’re one of us mere mortals you might be far better off simply buying one of their fantastic t-shirts, I’ve featured a few of my favourites here – check them out!

Sutsu Sir
Sutsu are perfectionists, it comes with the trade, every aspect of their site and label is so well done I’m a little at a loss what to say here. I suppose it’s all down to perfect balance, if you live on the edge, if you love the extreme ends of sport, if you don’t want to break your neck you have to know what your doing. There are no second chances when you’re somersaulting through the air, standing on the crest of a wave or traversing a monster ramp on four tiny wheels just for the hell of it. It makes sense that you’d need the best of the best, the best tools, the best equipment, the best clothes, the best style.
Expect the highest quality graphic designed prints on the best of the best organic t-shirts, geared and marketed to an √ºber cool audience who know what they want and where to get it. Sutsu really have got it going on, and they know it, but yet there’s still that Zen-like quality to everything on the site, there isn’t a hint of arrogance about this label, they are great at what they do because they know how to do it, end of. I’ve always been jealous of people like the guys at Sutsu, I used to think it was merely a result of a charmed life, but as the years have passed me by I’ve realised it’s all down to self discipline – you can kick up a ruck, you can battle with the forces of nature, tip the balance of consequence, but if you don’t have complete and utter confidence in yourself and what you do, you will trip up, and when the odds are mounted this high, that’s literally a life or death situation. A time and place that sorts the men from the boys, a moment that can make or break you.
The moment you arrive at Sutsu.com you know you’re in the right place, as in extreme sports, on-line fashion retailing is not a place to make mistakes. A common misconception in the industry is that a few well designed products will pave the way to success, it’s true that a strong line in designer items will raise your game, but there’s so much more to it than that and Sutsu are obviously well aware of that fact. Without even scouring through the site I’m immediately made aware of their market, their goals, their philosophy, as well as bowled over by the clean cut design. There’s even a Facebook applet slap bang on the homepage if you want to start chatting with the team and other customers, now that’s interactivity. Ecology, style, extreme sports and fashion all meld into one at Sutsu… read more
