Here’s a fascinating new label for the girls, a Netherlands fashion company called Cottonmouth have just released their first three limited edition t-shirts at their very very snazzy site Cottonmouth.nl. Founded by the original designers for another very popular Dutch tee label Sjeurt, they have expanded their horizons and ventured forth into the world of high female fashion, producing the best of the best quality tees for a discerningly artistic female market. Right now they have just three women’s t-shirts on offer but they’re well worth checking out, if only as a pointer for things to come. Expect stylish art shirts with an irreverent attitude to life, culture and style on the street. The store is available in Dutch and English and offers sweatshop free fashions (manufactured in USA and design, silkscreen printed tees and labels in the Netherlands), and all their orders are shipped in bio and recycled packaging, which is good to know.

Their first collection is entitled ‘MADemoiselle‘ and was inspired by the god of Pop Art Andy Warhol, yes I am a Warholian, a devotee of Andy’s work, (if you love Pop or Graffiti art, or any kind of contemporary graphic design you just can’t help it ;). Using portraits of women and girls of different decades on girly shirts Cottonmouth’s MADemoiselle them includes a scorcher of a tee, I love their take on Double Dutch – superbly designed and printed on a long comfortable T-shirt that features a stylish deeper plunged neck. Their experimentation with colours and cuts extends to Kiss me Cottonmouth, a tunic-dress that also doubles as a shirt and Fabulous Cottonmouth – a stylish long sleeved tee. All of their shirts are limited to just 20 pieces so if you’re female and want to wow your friends and acquaintances or just a stranger or two on the street I’d advice you rush over there now!

Double Dutch Tee

Double Dutch, a phrase that’s been doing the rounds for years, in the 1980s, (and yes each of these t-shirts references a different cultural era) there was a craze for intricate skipping that grew from the breakdance movement and eventually across the globe. There are a lot of cultural references to the term in the Eighties including an album by The Eames Era, a couple of songs, my favourite being Malcolm McClaren’s South African stylee version from Duck Rock and of course the inimitable writing style of John O’Mills (although his works hark back far earlier!). Cottonmouth‘s t-shirt follows the jump rope theme with aplomb, a quintessential foray into retro culture with a splendid stencil style composition brimming with clear cut line, tone and colour. Silkscreen printed on an aqua tee it features a stylish, deeper plunged neck than a traditional V-neck, but there are only 3 left in the limited run of 20 so hurry if you want it!! Kiss Me Cottonmouth Tee

This one certainly oozes Warhol, Kiss Me Cottonmouth is a deconstruction of the popular movie idol narrative that Andy so loved to follow in his art works. With a smear of blood red lipstick and the flash of a pair of thick and full black eyelashes to frame the eyes of a movie star’s beauty, Cottonmouth have created a design that’s bang on target. A cheeky number for a classic and timeless styling, I particularly love the awesome expression conveyed here, faux surprise meets an internal query “where are the cameras?”. A unique tunic-style dress that can also work as a long t-shirt with an elastic waistband, raw edges and a gathered neckband. Just 6 of these left too. Available for ‚Ǩ49 in Small and Medium.

Fabulous Cottonmouth

A retro classic embodied by the name Fabulous Cottonmouth, harking back to vintage style and fashion magazines, at almost the beginning of Andy Warhol’s career he was a commercial illustrator, back then photography didn’t quite have the stranglehold it does today over the media, and many artists were employed to create the most fabulous looking women possible – and yes they did it without Photoshop! Traditional illustrative style print with a uniquely composed colour palette, this thermal tee has deliberately been designed longer so as to suit the taller, leggier women amongst you. Definitely an eye-opener, slick and chic, if you wear this to the beach make sure it’s Cannes ;) Just 6 left now at ‚Ǩ59.
