Are You a Junk Funk Junkie?
Don’t let the name fool you, it’s all top quality street wear at one of Brighton’s (UK) most prestigious urban labels, www.junkfunk.com offer a wide range of cool tees, hoodies and other groovy gear, and of course they produce their own snazzy line in graphic tees. Their range is particularly popular with the Brits however you can order their clothing from anywhere in the world. They also have their own rather entertaining art and fashion blog if you’re in the mood for more background info on Junk Funk and all their latest offerings and top picks from the urban and designer scene.
Expect to find plenty of revolutionary designs from predominantly the latest and greatest UK indie labels as well as JF’s own homegrown fashion line, keep an eye out for Mr Wingate, Sixpack, Katy & Paul, NOI and of course Junkfunk! Whilst you’re there, if you’re an art lover you might want to check out their prints and paintings too, I especially like the Jon Burgerman wallpaper (which you can colour in!). If you know someone with a birthday coming up you might want to consider getting one of their gift certificates whilst you’re at it. Anyway, let’s check out those t-shirts!
Instant Ego T-Shirt

Wow, what can I say? Junkfunk have hit the nail on the head with this tee as far as I’m concerned, I love culture-jamming, messing up the history of advertising and subverting marketing techniques for all they’re worth, and JF have certainly done that with this t-shirt design. Bold, clean, crisp, clear and straight to the point (no i’m not selling toothpaste, washing powder, or any household product I’m just elaborating with a little expression hah). There are some generic images in the world of advertising ripe for a pillaging and toothpaste commercials, in fact just about everything you can squeeze for instant relief are totally on target, be it pile cream or that gawd awful cheese muck they sell in the USA, and Junkfunk have done it to a tee (excuse the pun). Very very smart! You can get an Instant Ego in red or green at just £10!! Yes I want it, I need some ego boosting now!
Car Tree T-shirt

Another superb Junkfunk t-shirt design, the Car Tree t-shirt offers a very strong environmental message, happy at home with avant-garde artworks like Stonefridge and Ant Farm’s Cadillac Ranch, this t-shirt shares a great deal of positive sentiment with many social activist art. I particularly appreciate the addition of parking tickets to the tree trunk. I can spot quite a few defunct car models in this design, it’s true that the car may turn out to be the greatest enemy of the ecology, the proof is in the pudding, and the pudding is in millions of landfill sites and scrapyards around the world. Perhaps it’s time purely manufacture cars from recycled steel, after all considering the price most metal ore reaches these days and the damage mining is doing to the earth it’s worth considering. Besides if the ice caps continue to melt we can make boats out of them instead :/ Available in mustard and slate colours at £24.50 each.
Paint The Town Red T shirt
![]() |
Paint The Town Red is available for both men and women and comes in brown (women) and denim and charcoal (men) and is available at £24.50 for either style. I have a particular penchant for old Communist iconography, no I’m not a fan of the political movement although I can admit to a few Marxist leanings, i.e a collective responsibility for society and the future can but only help the state we’re in right now, but Communist propagandist art was for some reason extremely Pop. I suspect it was kept blunt and simple to be as an effective tool for the government as possible, but now that the USSR has collapsed it’s more of a treasure trove for artists and designers everywhere. Nice take on a popular theme.
Bubble World T-shirt

I don’t normally do “cute” but essentially JF’s Bubble World tee gives more than a nod and a wink to Banksy (hey why wasn’t he nominated for The Turner Prize anyway?) amd the message is loud and ecologically clear. A very street style print with a twist, cool, delicately handled and a great piece of stencillage going on in this fine example from the Junkfunk range. Get it in denim, olive, light blue, brown and slate for £24.50.
Check out all the fab tees at www.junkfunk.com and for the Brits out there, don’t worry Junkfunk don’t charge VAT!
