Freestyling With Hideout Tees
EnterTheTreehouse.com have just produced their first three t-shirt designs under the label “Hideout” and assure me they have another three on the way very soon. What’s unique about this small but mighty collaboration of Leicestershire based graduate designers (Robert Palmer, Jonathan Moon and Tash Walkerdine) is their total passion for BMX. They are currently aiming to promote their screen-printed t-shirts by sponsoring BMXers, Rob who is the most fanatical about the sport is actually a BMXer himself and as a film maker has decided to push his BMX videos through Hideout. Their latest BMX video is out next week. The video stars amongst others; Robbo who is in the Mutiny BMX team – MutinyBikes.com and Frog from the Deluxe BMX team – DeluxeBMX.com. They plan on producing a new video every 6 months, and have already received some great feedback on the trailer. What’s more many BMX teams are already clambering for sponsorship so all is on the up and up as far as the Hideout label is concerned!
They do just about everything under the sun under the banner of “graphic”, including music videos, corporate videos, design, stop motion animation video being very close to their hearts, they’re what I’d describe as modern day urban surrealists working for a buck to pay the rent. These are the kind of people that would’ve been printing flyers and calling for a revolution back a century or so. But now, in their present incarnations we can expect their art to do the talking for them, and it doesn’t just talk, it shouts, no it sings, loud and strong, visually lifting them above the usual diatribe of commercial design and into a quirky and unique realm unseen by the likes of Leicestershire in a very long time, if ever. They’ve already had a few brief brushes with fame, their recent video for Kyte‘s, “Boundaries” (the song that appeared on The Sopranos‘ final episode advert in the USA) got them a showing on MTV2 in 2008.
But enough of their glorious diversifications in the world of commercial arts, let’s get down to the nitty gritty and show you their first three offerings in the majestic form of the arts medium more commonly known as “t-shirts” on offer at their incredible store! read more
My New Invisible Friend
My old pal, well an online friend, perhaps he’s my invisible friend, anyway, Ian Cretney of Invisible Friend has just released his latest collection of revamped and highly original new tees at his fresh and snazzily redesigned site at www.invisible-friend.co.uk. This is probably a collection you won’t be familiar with, and it always surprises me that I.F haven’t had far more exposure than they do, the truth is that it just takes time for the public to catch on to new ideas and new ways of thinking.
To be frank, one of my all-time favourite t-shirts is by this guy, it’s called Dead Rock Stars, he sent me a freebie when I first reviewed the site, totally out of the blue, as you know I don’t ask for freebies to review t-shirts, I do it for the lurve as they say. Anyway, I love that t-shirt to death, which is rather apt, and looking down I’ve just noticed I’m wearing it again! Ian is what I’d call a true craftsman in the field of t-shirt design and production, he’s a dedicated soul who spent the first few years hand screen printing every single shirt, as the business has grown he’s branched out and took on a little help to keep up with demand, (in fact he’s promised to guide me through the art of screen printing so I can start producing my own graffiti posters), but rest assured, the ethos and philosophy of Invisible Friend is still as strong and true as ever.
Trying to pin down exactly what that might be is a tricky thing though, I suppose you could say it lies somewhere in an artistic mind’s interpretation of urban myth, social revolution and music folklore peppered with a healthy dose of cynical humour and a rather laid-back attitude to mortality. Each t-shirt is almost a work of modern art in itself, the iconography lies halfway between graffiti and Post-Modern illustration, the attitude, quirky, irreverent, and with an undercurrent of ever-so-slightly solemnity, which for me is an extremely refreshing change from the usual run-of-the-mill funny one-liners tees you’ll usually come across on the Net. read more
End Of Sale Offer at Spunky
A UK favourite for urban tees, Spunky have been going for ten years now, and even I’d sold a design to them last year so you you can expect funny and surreal every time, and they’re always up for a laugh at SP:UK, but they also have a great head for business. They started off doing the rounds at music festivals a decade ago, and have expanded to become a major presence online. They created a similar model to Threadless years before anyone else (including Threadless.com), well at least that’s what they tell me, although I’ve never found the voting section, I’m guessing they use staff and a random selection of customers to carry out the votes. Anyway, all you need to know is they’re having a final clear out of stock at the moment, and that means they’ve got some dirt cheap high quality hilarious tees at Spunky right now.
It’s the end of the sale sale! Here are a few of their latest just to give you an idea of what’s on offer: read more
