I’ve only just recently discovered Symbolika.com – a highly unique, inspirational and dare I say it experimental fashion design company created by a Fabian Klainman, born in Uruguay, 1967, a gifted designer with an impressive background in interior, product and graphic design. Having an impressive and diverse history in the design arts, Fabian studied at the pre-eminent Central St. Martin’s School of Arts in London, after graduating he formed his own design agency with two friends in Tel Aviv before travelling India for 3 years, this fundamental shamanic rite of passage inspired him to form Symbolika. All of his designs are created in the winter in Goa, India, the t-shirts are “Made in Trance“, but are manufactured and printed in Israel in the spring.

Symbolika first evolved in 2001 when they began to have phenomenal success selling their wares directly at all the major trance festivals of Europe, including The Boom in Portugal, Glade in England, Voov in Germany as well as Universo Paralelo in Bahia, Brazil. Furthermore their wholesale t shirts division drops to Australia, Japan, Greece & 3 of the most popular shops in Amsterdam: Stupermundi Party Clothes, Full Moon and Moon Drop shop and The Pollinator Company. However since 2007 their t-shirts have been available directly online at www.Symbolika.com and the company has never looked back! Fabian has continuously experimented with techniques, styles and even cuts, producing traditional, sleeveless, short and long sleeve and even “triangle cut” tees, as well as an ever expanding range of other unique products such as Thai Fisherman pants, large scale posters and lampshades.

Still it is self evident that t-shirts are and always will be Symbolika’s first love, and their ever growing legion of fans are a testament to the ingenuity, persistence and unique insights of this rather special t-shirt design label. Many of the designs have a deeply spiritual inspiration, something rare in the world of tees, and yet the technical ability and perfection of design from this company must leave much of their competition green with envy. The design process normally starts off with manual sketching and scanning, slowly detailing design until achieving its final form, which is then accurately recreated in vector on a CAD application, and sometimes tonally enhanced via Photoshop. working closely with the print masters, they have developed a method of printing with fine resolution silk screens and thin layers of paint, to achieve very fine lines and focus. this also contributes to the lightness of the prints, even when using up to 9 different screens for extremely detailed & colourful designs, and only one screen for designs printed with a hinted glow in the dark print directly on the fabric.

Each design is inspired by a variety of spiritual ideals and figures of Eastern and Indian religion and philosophy. Such influences include sacred geometry, tessellation and mandalas combining both traditional and original symbolism. Other designs take their inspiration from Hindu and Buddhist mythology, Yoga, the Kabbalah, Shamanism as well as visionary artists including Alex Grey, Robert Venosa, Salvador Dali, M.C Escher and Pablo Amaringo.

Symbolika t-shirt designs uniquely take account of the “space between the lines”, preferring to use the colour of the shirts as an integral part of the colour palette, thereby reducing the thickness of each print affording a more comfortable and more wearable fashion item.

Every year since 2001, a few more designs are added to the collection which now consists of about 30 different prints. the shirts are printed back and front with related symbols that together form a story.
