Back to School (again)
Since my post on SpreadShirt‘s latest Back to School Sale I thought I’d better mention a few other sales for the season (in the name of fairness and equality). Just to confuse matters further I’ve included Bruce P. Squirrels’ Back to School’ t-shirt which isn’t on sale and is probably already banned by a majority of schools (and parents) out there, I have a feeling it’s hinting at the ongoing fears of all concerned about school safety and security these days.
In Britain we don’t have guns, or at least not legally, but we do have knives, and in every other way our schools system is starting to mirror America’s own state school system. Some of the most infamous schools, especially those in inner city areas where serious violence has been known to flare up from time to time, new security measures have been taking over the school gates over the past few years.
Being a pupil these days must feel like working at an airport, with new metal detector arches and security officers cropping up at every turn, I’m surprised that the UK government and its local authorities have the money to spend on these extreme measures. After all many failing schools in Britain can hardly afford to pay their teachers, or fix the roof, or resist selling off their playing grounds. If they really want to reduce violence in schools, I’d recommend pouring more resources into empowering the younger generation, allowing them to have more say in our democracy, and putting the weight of responsibility back onto their families and local communities. Teachers aren’t trained in hand-to-hand combat, and the presence of security guards and checkpoints only instil a deeper feeling of mistrust and paranoia between the generations.
Besides I wasn’t allowed to wear t-shirts at school, I had to wear an awful uniform with a blazer and tie, and a crest on the pocket. I suppose it did reduce bullying in the yard, you couldn’t tell who was rich or poor, and no one looked cool. The downside was the enormous fights with other schools nearby, usually somewhere out of the sight of parents and teachers. My mother’s a teacher, near enough retired now, and she always said the best way to reduce school violence is to talk to kids rather than at them. But then again, I know plenty of adults out there who never listen, so I don’t see how we can expect it of youths.
Anyway, as promised, here’s a couple more ‘Back To School’ sales for you.
ShirtMagic.com are similar to CafePress.com (but a whole heck smaller), if you’re looking to save a little on your own custom DTG (direct to garment) print tees (I’d not recommend their own designs bleugh), then take a lookie at this…
Not that I’ve heard of them before, but CharlotteNCApparel.com are on their last day of their back to school sale, if you’re after a few bargains then you’d better hurry! Funnily enough it seems that their domain leads to CompanyCasuals.com which sounds more industrial than educational, but at least they should be hard wearing (lol).
